Asalaamu Alaikum;

I enjoy reading your blog very much. I moved to Saudi Arabia about 6 months ago. I lived all my life in South Africa where wearing hijab is not the norm. Although i do wear hijab back home.
I am quite used to wearing the Abaya now because men in Saudi generally stare at you if you stand out. Its very different here in the sense that men think little of you if you are not dressed modestly. I would prefer to be covered up and be respected by others than to open up and be belittled.
The point being you need to adapt to the cultures of Saudi. Wearing Abaya etc. If you are muslim, wearing hijab is not culture it is law. There's lots of wisdom in this law and only if we open ourselves up to this wisdom would we embrace the hijab and not resent it.

I feel beautiful, free, respected and protected in my hijab and cannot imagine my life with it.

Keep up the good work!!!
Regards
Fahmieda

Salam,

I like your article very much. I am a muslim who converted from Christianity. I saw the culture clash that you had with America and Saudi. I am American. Women and men in Islam are both ordained to dress modestly. Women cover their hair in front of strangers, meaning people they aren't married to including cousins of puberty. This is a pure form of our dignity. You wouldn't go out in public naked, would you? This is a form of protection from lusts and wandering eyes. Men are allowed four wives if they can take care of them equally. There are an abundant amount of women in the war and this is a war in which men can take care of women. This is discouraged in islam though for many men cannot take care of four women. I am just a teenager. Don't feel down because you have to cover up. Your husband is right, you are precious gem and should be looked upon only by him. Every man do not need to look at your private beauty. Allah is God in Arabic. He married you because he saw something that he loved. He's not trying to change you, but preserve you. Every woman is beautiful and should be treated as such, not as a merchandise for sale!!

Wa alaikum salam!!!
