blogspot better than wordpress.com, blogspot powerfull in templating than wordpress.com. but more better to use wordpress in self hosted.
  2. tpvswp
For the best FREE blogging solution I wouldn't recommend anything else but WordPress. You don't need to go self-hosted to enjoy WordPress, a free blog at wordpress.com will do.
    1. kaushalpec
but don't u think that wordpress templates are simple
    2. tpvswp
Not sure what you mean by "simple"? They may have their limitations in terms of customization (how much can you possible do with, say, a two-column theme?), and I'd love to see more color schemes, but they're not simple. To me, a blog is about content, not about making a visual feast. But if you cannot fit your content into the themes supplied by free wordpress.com, well, in that case you better blog somewhere else.
  3. wandadog13
well if we're talking about getting noticed by Google - then you gotta go with the Google product of Blogger haven't you?

No probs with my Blogger blog and we're now on 240+posts.

Sometimes the rss feed via feedburner doesn't always trigger an alert - but then it works fine later on.
    1. kaushalpec
so.. for SEO i need blogger but if i am a serious blogger. i need wordpress
    2. tpvswp
For getting noticed with Google you can go with any blogging platform. I haven't seen any significant difference which type of blogs that rank higher in search results. What matters more is optimizing your blog topic and blog posts, as in using keywords and tags correctly. In my opinion WordPress does a better job at that than Blogger.
  4. weblogian
    Dear kaushalpec,
I personally recommend Wordpress plateform. Customisaztion is easy as most theme makers give support and also many available in the net.(google it)
WARNING! Don't ever trust an Indian Database server. It sucks. Try the hosting suggested by wordpress itself.
  5. latinocool79
Do as I did. Start with blogger and get used to blogging and then if you really want to make the great leap get your own domain and choose wordpress. It was tricky and it requires to be a little bit more web savy and clever. BUt if you don't care about making money or becoming a serious blogger (serious meaning to have an own domain) then just stick with blogger.
    1. tpvswp
If "serious" is limited to having your own domain, then free-hosted wordpress.com will do just fine. And that is not tricky at all.
  6. latinocool79
but you will have the wordpress name and not your own dot com. Having an own dot com gave me more traffic power and also you can earn money. You cannot in wordpress.com
    1. tpvswp
WRONG! You can have ANY domain name if you have a blog at wordpress.com
      faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/10/domain-mapping/
As far as money goes, yes, it is a bit limited but not totally off limits.
    2. AshanKumar
Hi I have a blog.com blog at the moment, recently I have bought my own domain, what do you advice? I am looking at getting into serious blogging?

If you know your way around Wordpress then it is much better than Blogspot.
  8. weblogian
Wordpress plugins and widget are great stuff. You just need to activate that. I find download monitor very useful. Here Only registered User can access your file for download.

    1. kaushalpec
hi can u let me know more about WP plugins..
i haven't found any concrete or cool
    2. Takumi86
Thanks for this, yes its true Wordpress has so many plugin than Blogger have
  9. manumartin
Blogspot.. simply it has great templates available if you are passionate about design... and plugins are lot...

I wrote a long, overly detailed post about the issue. Check it out

Basically, though, I think Wordpress is the best.
  11. kush86
get your own domain and hosting install wordpress.
    1. kaushalpec
      @@kush86
no money to get own domain
      LOL
    2. latinocool79
godaddy has free hosting but the down side is that they put a banner at the top. Still its free so just 10 bucks to get a .com name. However, i bought a domain and bought a hosting plan and adsense paid the whole year already so it will pay back.
    3. tpvswp
I would never ever go for something free with a banner on top...yuk!
At wordpress.com you can have a domain and map it to your WordPress blog for $15/yr. If you cannot even afford that...
    4. kush86
No money? Domain is less than $10. I know web host less than a gallon of gas a month. You telling me you can't afford less than $50 a year?

That is what's wrong with people these days. Always trying to go at things for free. If you blogging for fun than pick blogspot or wordpress. If you serious wait until you get your paycheck if you have a job.

For everybody looking for cheap hosting go to www.kushmoney.com and click on the banner to get 99% off first month. Hosting is $2.95 a month. Subscribe to kushmoney.com while you there. I am talking with other companies to get my readers better deals on domains and more.
  12. kaushalpec
people saying that making money in WP is tough..
also google search engine prefers Blogspot..
    is it true??????????//
  13. AmmoBob
Why limit yourself to just those two... Look around, read and get your own hosting service. Most offer a wide range of software for blogging and you can try different ones until you find what you like. I use Drupal and find it very easy, with a lot of capability....
    Have fun....
  14. exinco
on blogspot you can install many thing than wordpress

    @kaushalpec
A key factor is whether or not you want to have advertising. In the post at the link below you will find the differences between free hosted wordpress.com blogs and self hosted wordpress.org installs that can be used on your own domain.
    (1) blogger initiated advertising is *NOT* allowed on free hosted wordpress.com blogs;
    faq.wordpress.com/2005/12/08/adsense/
    (2) the only exceptions made are for VIP bloggers
    wordpress.com/vip-hosting
    (3) wordpress.com is already running adsense on our blogs and, on the global tag pages wordpress.com/blog/2006/09/06/on-ads
    (4) Only one account for Google adsense can be placed on any blog and on free-hosted wordpress.com blogs that account is held by Automattic on behalf of their project which is wordpress.com

At the head of the wordpress.com support forum is this sticky post that clearly describes the differences between wordpress.com blogs and wordpress.org free self-hosting software en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=3700&replies=1
In the FAQs one can use the search box and easily find faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/wordpresscom-vs-wordpressorg/

My best advice is that if you know where you are headed towards a monetized blog then get a domain, get a web host, download the free software from wordpress.org and set up your blog with advertising on it right from the beginning.
The details for purchasing a domain and domain mapping from wordpress.com are found here. faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/10/domain-mapping/
My blog post on this subject is here onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2008/06/26/how-and-why-to-get-your-own-domain/
IMO the allegation that google search engine prefers Blogspot blogs is unfounded.
I hope this helps you. Happy blogging
  17. jims
let me get things straight....if you want to make money and at the same time you want to start from scratch, then try Blogger...if you want to make more money and you have some money, then try wordpress.org (paid version). If you don't have any money and you don't want to make money, then again go for Blogspot.

Wordpress.com is just a waste of time( you can't even have entrecard widget in it)
    1. timethief
Web hosting is not necessarily expensive and it's a basic business principle that if you want to make money, you have to spend money. Indeed if one spends a little money in order to make a little money by hiring a web host and downloading free self hosted wordpress.org software then they can download the free entrecard plugin. WordPress Plugin Entrecard Popper myblogit.net/2008/05/23/wordpress-plugin-entrecard-popper/

Alternatively, if you have no money at all that you wish to invest then go with Blogger as it's owned by Google and you can advertise on a free hosted Blogspot blog. The downside to having a blogspot blog is that there are many spam blogs and splogs being hosted by Blogger and that their support is very poor. So another consideration is how much you know about blogging and how much support you will require.
    2. tpvswp
If you want to make money and at the same time you want to start from scratch FOR FREE, then try Blogger.

If you want to make more money and you have some money, then try wordpress.org (paid version) OR any other blogging solution that allows commercial content.

timethief is an excellent proponent for wordpress.org, but there are more than only that option around.
    3. kyanmay
i picked blogger because it is FREE to upload your own template. great for newbies.
  18. 0xf
    My choice is hosted wordpress!
  19. hartanta
    - if you (very-very) serious you must have self hosted. you must think money that you must pay is invesment. And wordpress script is the best choice.
    - but if you still with the free... blogger.com more interesting and easy than wordpress.com
  20. 4Freedoms
Use hosted wordpress it is more reliable.
  21. Crazysah
Wordpress is much better and reliable and it is pretty easy to use!

just buy your own domain name and redirect it to blogspot or wordpress services.

once you feel that you want to host your own site, you'll be able to redirect that domain name to your own site.

I tried making a word press blog last night I didn't like it much...IMO Blogger is much user friendly than Wordpress
  30. D3Marketers
Free wordpress doesn't permit ads and other money making schemes. Blogspot is free and you can monetize it the way you like.
  31. D3Marketers
With my experience in blogger, it's good for newbies bacause of the simple copy and paste procedure in adding html and java scripts to your blog. You can even edit your template the way you like it anytime. As far as I'm concerned, its only the plug-ins that blogger maybe or maybe not lagging behind wordpress
  32. kevster1
wordpress all the way the add-ons are endless. Its also quite easy to pick up
  33. CrisRo
I like wordpress, although depending on what plug-ins you use you may have to edit them to make them work. Still, it really simplifies things for me, making it easier for me to post content.

But I think this discussion is more geared at "Where do I want my blog hosted for free at".
    1. CrisRo
I honestly wouldn't know the difference. So disregard my previous comment, as I have never had a blog and NOT owned the domain associated with it.

But I think that the themes you can use for your own domain trump anything you can put on your website. Using Wordpress (www.wordpress.org) I was able to make my website much nicer. Now I just have to go about manually resizing a whole lot of images and making my new logo.

Check out the free open source theme I use (you have to pay $99.99 or something a year for support, faqs, etc. However, I know enough code to understand how it worked =-D ) there is a link at the bottom of my homepage.
  34. Gayan
There are pros and cons for each

Pros for Wordpress - I like how it allows different themes and more customization in the look and feel. You can have Gadgets "Top Posts", "tag Cloud" I consider very important features.

Pros for Blogger - allows lots of external gadgets, can add google analytics, quick indexing.

Cons for WordPress - it doesn't allow to use Google Analytics (it has its own stst), and I couldn't find ways to import external gadgets, html/scripts.

Cons for Blogger - less customization options, I couldn't setup "tage clouds" or "Top posts" (but I assume I could find an external application)

Anyway, I use blogger, started to use Wordpress. I think starting with blogger was good for my blog.
  35. wehireu
Blogspot is much easier to use, however it is less flexible with what you can do with it. Wordpress has better plugins. Blogspot also allows better advertising. I use Blogspot. They have different strengths and weaknesses.
  36. godsprincess
Blogger is great for it's simplicity and options for widgets.

Yep! They sure do... and use Wordpress!

Of course, if you want to post to both - one way is to get Microsoft LiveWriter, switch between blogs and post on both! Can be done in about five seconds...

      Windows Live Writer... hmmm...
  40. creemos
Yes... I am not a fan of much of Microsoft bulky programs but I will admit that I do ALL my postings using LiveWriter! I am a huge fan of its functionality and ease of use too!

(I have a son who works with Microsoft and, if he is reading this, I am sure he is shocked! LOL

Wordpress ALL THE WAY MAN!!! ALL THE WAY!! I use for both my sites:
    HavocDynamics.xtreemhost.com (HavocDynamics.co.nr)
    AND
    FinalFRACUS.xtreemhost.com (FinalFRACUS.co.nr)

When you see these two sites you will agree with me!! Haha

NB: The .co.nr are short url redirects (And it makes my sites look like they have a domain )
  42. bassboys
wordpress all the way, it's more dynamic than blogger, and try .co.cc domain with a self-hosted wordpress blog. The .co.cc site offers dns control so you can setup dns records and not just redirect.Works really well.

    I use it here afreka.co.cc
  43. destinedforwhat
i have tried both blogger and wordpress. i have also used typepad but it is not free. i did like it though and the only reason i stopped using it is because i stopped blogging for an extended period of time and couldn't see paying for something i wasn't using.

my ONLY complaint with wordpress.com is not being able to use javascript. it limits some of the things i would like to do, but i would prefer wordpress over blogger for sure. maybe someday i can learn enough to get brave and try wordpress.org and get a domain.
  44. teguhyuliantos

Blogspot is blocked at all US schools and government buildings/associations. That ought to be reason enough to go self-hosted Wordpress. Note: Wordpress is also blocked at those same location and that is just the ones I know of. Limiting your audience is never good.

Having said that, Self-Hosted Wordpress is marvelous and you will fall in love with the features and ease of use if you take the time to try it. You will never miss Blogspot. I haven't missed it for two years.

I ever used WorldPress, need to self install and pay for hosting & for ur own www. The advantage is that you can have more control in Worldpress than Blogger.

wordpress is waaay better. blogpost is fine too but wordpress trumps blogger because it has tons of plugin and templates that you can use. wordpress is more than a blog. it can be used as an online shop, CMS, static website, & more. check out my wordpress site: onewaynorth.com

Just 3 days ago now this arose in another thread www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/blogger-vs-wordpress-survey#comment_72327... and then went on to create another the following day www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/enough-arguing-blogger-vs-wordpress

I agree wholeheartedly with what you say. My opinion is based on personal experience as is yours. But I wonder if there's any value in arguing this point with BC members, who are perfectly happy with their Blogger blogs.

Those who wish to become wordpress.org bloggers on their own domain will find there are resources and other members who can help them onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2008/06/26/how-and-why-to-get-your-own-domain/

  63. codesucker
I like blogger because of the transiliteration.. does wordpress offer this?
  64. Jules66
    Good question:)

I have blogspot, and I find it really user friendly.

I did join up with word press the other day, just to see what it is all about ;-)

I haven't actually done anything with it yet. It does 'appear' a bit more complicated to use, but at least it does have more functions, and more templates to choose from or download!!

Anyway I'm sticking to my blogspot for now. It's just a hobby to me anyway.
  65. trackermo
Bottom line: Wordpress can be transferred to your own site (eventually). Blogsspot (or Blogger) is stuck where it is (unless they've changed that recently).

    No contest.
  66. LaMirabelle
I'm with neither My hosting service is taking care of everything for 50€/year.
They offer advertisement to be placed on the blog (I expect to make 50€/year) and it's not intrusive. I have my domain, a decent choice of designs, I can add java widgets, but no adsense (amazon is tolerated), they give you a sitemap, 60 pages in addition to your main blog (pages don't have dates. I use them for presenting my work as a translator to potential clients). If the staff was friendlier it would be great (avoid the forum).

My blog on cystic fibrosis is hosted by Blogspot. I don't like it so far but I don't really need much "fancy" stuff for this blog, nor advertising anyway.
  67. insomia
    definately blogspot^^

I use blogspot. Not so much because anyone cares what I blog about, but it helped me get top notch google search results for my business. Wordpress might have same results.
  75. jameswarren11
wordpress.org i'd say, i've just moved from graffiti-urban-art.blogspot.com to www.world-graffiti.com, the system and widgets are better, less crazy google bugs, and you get total control of the site, whereas google can pull your site whenever they like really. Blogger are evil about exporting your blog too, and make it difficult. Go wordpress!
  76. roseliabubakar
My vote for self hosted wordpress
  77. SpotCoolStuff
For a simple basic blog, I think blogger is best. For any sort of personalized blog or beyond-basic blog then WordPress is *much* more flexible.

So, I vote for a self-hosted WordPress blog, too. Not incidentally, there's a review of the four best hosts for a WordPress blog at:

    web.spotcoolstuff.com/best-host/website-wordpress-blog
  78. gypsychant
When I first started I used Blogspot. It was very simple and put me on the road to blogging. I started two blogs on blogspot. My third blog I used wordpress.com. I did not like it as much but it forced me to learn more. Then I self hosted and have four more blogs on wordpress.org. I am still learning. I would of loved to of taken a class to teach me as the books did not answere my questions always. I have connected with many a wordpress theme writer also (by clicking there name at bottom of theme.

Blogspot is easier but less choices of themes.

Wordpress.com does not allow you to use pluggins, only widgets. Otherwise it is ok.

Wordpress sets u up with two default themes straight off but there are thousands of free themes available and more sophisticated themes for sale. they have a forum where u ask questions and a codex and educational videos now (not that great yet).

The other advantage to being self hosted(org) is it looks more professional because you do not have to have the words blogspot or wordpress follow you around on your url.

I know it is crazy I have so many blogs but I could not decide which topics I liked most so I did my favorites. I have made private two blogs. If you like I can recommend favorite books I have found to be helpful.

I've been a blogger user for years but I like using wordpress now.
  80. salampradeep
Wll it depends on the world location zone.
US & Canada they prefer Wordpress
While South-East Asia, China, India they used Blogger

Wordpress is more easy than Blogger.

Blogger u can add Adsense javascripts and generate revenue form them.
That feature is not available in Wordpress, I heard dat the latter gonna develop soon,
Well this is my blog on generating revenue using a blogger

The issues I am having with spacing and layout in Blogspot are driving me nuts! If I add a picture to my post, the spacing gets all messed up! Is there any way to link the two sites (post on both) or is that redundant?
  82. varunshridhar
both interfaces have their own constraints. As a blogger who has used both platforms, I feel WP is the best, it keeps u hooked with the neat stats.
  83. electricskeleton

Agreed. IMO wp software is superior. However, it's an individual choice and many are happy with their blogspot blogs.
  86. radioflyer1980
I've tried several free blogsites, including Blogger. I like my wordpress.com site because it gives me a lot of what I want. It's not perfect. I can't add a lot of the little outside widgets to other sites, but in terms of content management, it does a really good job.

I use blogspot. I am not very technical and I find it easy enough to work. I have never tried wordpress so I am not able to compare. Am happy where I am tho.

I'm a WordPress.com user myself. I chose it because I remember reading somewhere that even though Blogger probably benefits a lot from Google, WordPress has the largest number of users of all platforms. And so from the beginning you can connect more from within that network. Makes more sense to build community with other bloggers rather than relying on SEO.

Tried Drupal a few years ago, there were good ideas but realization not as polished as wordpress. Also Wordpress has a huge community, huge collection of templates and plugins that makes it unbeatable. Now I may look at Drupal again by curiosity but I doubt I would switch to it.

Examples of amazing Wordpress Free Premium Themes:

Is there anything equivalent in Drupal ?

"Comment removed by the community" ? Because I mentioned Drupal?

      Odd.

I started out using Blogger because it was free, and blogging was new to me, I wasn't sure, at the time, what lay ahead. My page rank is rising, and at this point, I see no reason to leave. Blogger works well for me.

Hi I have a blog.com blog at the moment, recently I have bought my own domain, what do you advice? I am looking at getting into serious blogging?
  96. preaxz
IMHO, you should use self hosted wordpress. I believe you can afford that, it's not that expensive. Also, you can make your the way you like it, it's all yours.

prwire.blog.com/ this is my blog, do you think I could tranfer all this to a word press or blogger? I got my own domain

Wordpress is far better than Blogspot in my opinion.

    i like blogspot better....feel it's more friendly

both has their advantages, i think the best will be you open a blog in both, and interconnect them.
that is mention your blog addresses in both places.
wordpress introduces your blogs to a huge reader circle and blogspot helps you in creating a dream blog.
a combination of blogpress+bc+wordpress is quite cool.
  101. insomia
    definately blogspot^^..
  102. Sebastyne
Open an account on both and see which you like more during the first 3 days or so, once you decide which one to go with, cancel the other.

It's such a question of preference that it's really hard to say. I love Wordpress, but only self-hosted, while I don't really like blogging on Blogspot AT ALL. The most important thing is that you LIKE blogging on it.

Try one. If it works, stick to it. Else try the other. If you like, continue. If you dont choose the lesser evil
Main point is to blog. Can you pull your stuff out in Blogspot? Yes. So go ahead and start writing

It is really easy to setup a domain and a blog at godaddy.com bit.ly/sTOxO there is a one click install and your blog is setup. with a little work you can definitely have a better looking blog with wordpress and it is faster when you host it at godaddy.com

I started with blogger and ended up on wordpress strictly because I needed more functionality on my blog.. and finally it looks exactly like I want it to! I think a quick look and you will see what I mean. jasonthebaldguy.com

Blogspot. Simple for the beginner, adaptable and open source for the programmer/expert. You don't need the "extra features" of Wordpress because you can engineer them yourself with HTML.
