So last weekend I was at the SOBCon conference and a point was made that you should have an elevator speech--a speech of about 2 to 3 minutes where you can explain to someone exactly what you or your company does.

Someone then followed up by asking if you had a twitter speech where you describe what you do in 140 characters or less.

Just wondering if you can explain what it is you do...in 140 characters or less. I'm pondering mine and will add it when I get a good one!

If someone tried to sell me on their company while I was on an elevator, I'd either punch them in the face or deliberately get off on the wrong floor.
    1. Jaybetee
i think the point is if you're asked, could you. not to randomly assault people with your company mission.
    2. gtally
Oh. Well that's a lot less obnoxious. Why not just say your mission statement?
    3. Jaybetee
well i think part of giving a lecture at a social media conference entails taking common things, i.e. mission statements, and giving them new and catchy names that people will spread virally through the twittosphere
    4. gtally
But isn't that still a mission statement?

I masturbate frequently. Sit languidly staring at a wall for a while. Write some stuff, go to the gym. Thats pretty much my corporation in a nut shell.
    1. MissSuzie
Stop staring at the wall and your corporation would grow bigger.
    2. MissSuzie
Every time I read this, I almost piss my pants.

"I masturbate frequently...Thats pretty much my corporation in a nut shell."
  6. rcal4848
MissSuzie but thats the most proactive part of my day. Did you know the old philosophers when they really wanted to think about something, would stand in the same spot for days sometimes. Just thinking about the one subject. These days people don't contemplate things for a long time. Five minutes of thinking on one thing would be an eternity of concentration for our over stimulated minds.
    1. MissSuzie
"but thats the most proactive part of my day."

Which part? The masturbation or the staring at the wall?

An elevator speech is as essential as a business card. You need to be able to say who you are, what you do, what you are interested in doing and how you can be a resource to your readers/listeners/clients.

How tall is the building of that elevator in question?
and is it a hydraulic elevator or electric traction?
    1. timethief
      @GFG
Please don't do this. Kooies is truly trying to focus on blog promotion and your interjections are not helpful in that regard. Please create or locate a comedy thread if you feel like having fun.

      I like that philosophy.

The elevator speech is the best example of an opportunity lost.

It is about as welcome as a telemarketer, it works against you more than it works for you, and people get trained to spit it out every chance they get. With the exact intention of a telemarketer, make enough calls and eventually you might get a sale.

Annoying and completely useless, there are much better ways of spending your two minutes if you actually want to get results as opposed of just barfing up a rehearsed sales pitch.
    1. lovelustandlife
Tell us how you really feel ; ) I understand and I think if you become a robot spouting info that was not asked of you then it will not work. I think in most of those situations that it is not your delivery so much as the person interest. You can't loss inters that was never there ti begin with. I guess I say that because I use to do surveys over the phone and made a few people mad, but I always met my quote and I think that it had something to do with the fact that I loved my job and I was not affected by people who were not interested.

I think being unprepared is more of a challenge for most than pitching to someone who happens to be uninterested.
  19. MidwestMom
When people ask what I do, I say that I am an author and that I write on parenting and motherhood. Only if they ask further questions do I talk about the places I write.

I use twitter to promote specific pieces of writing and to interact with colleagues. I resist the tendency to reduce what I do to a canned 'mission statement'.

I agree that this exercise could be helpful for people with other types of blogs, though.
    1. lovelustandlife
I like your approach and think I tend use that more often but I'm finding a pitch is helpful to sum up my blog about everything.

If asked I introduce myself. I'm Shirley _____. My blog is Proof Positivity which is largely based on community service and the positive that it is going on in the world. Proof Positivity is not on the "If it bleeds it leads bandwagon." I want you to see the heart and soul of people.

on Twitter my user name is proofpositivity so there is no need to introduce my blog.

and it would look like proofpositivity a site about the positives in the world.

I would try this: "Can we speek in private ... in my room ?" (+- 40 letters).
If something goes wrong i will add "dahm .. are you gay? I will visit a friend first, wait for me in next floor"
  23. kdawg68
I like to break the ice by going the "Egon" route (from Ghostbusters).

Sniffle a few times, look generally nervous, then blurt out:

"Hi, I collect spores, molds, and fungus" while extending my hand.
