How is stumble upon treating you?

Stumble upon is my favorite way of getting traffic. Some argue they do not stay in the site, do not click ads and basically there is no value for the site.
I find the opposite experience. They read my other posts. Average page view is 2.3 & A lot of them have subscribed for my feed. And I get a decent revenue from adsense clicks too.

If not SU , what is your favorite social bookmarking site to get traffic?

Haven't gotten a thing from it...then, I just kinda signed up for it and then didn't do anything else...don't quite get how it works.-

2.add the stumble tool bar and hit thumbs up when ever you see a good post.
3.After doing this for a while start adding your own posts to su...
4. Keep adding more friends.
5. Give value to the community by recommending good readings.
That is my manthra for SU. And they have never let me down in the past 2 months since I started blogging. -

hey antharjalaya, I really need to learn more from you regarding SU. I have a few traffic coming and I can see it works. But I want to maximize it. Do they have a feature where I can do a shout to all my friends like BC's broadcast do?
I will try your "add friend" tactic and also SU other posts.

They do not have a shout feature and I think that is good. In this way only good posts get the exposure. But you can send your pages to friends via the " send" feature in su tool bar. If you are serious about getting su traffic install their tool bar. And start using it.No they do not work like a search engine. What they do is spreading good web sites voted by it's own members.
I made may last post 4 days ago, and today also it got 300+ visits from su.

Although I don't stumble many pages, I seem to get a fair amount of traffic from SU. Not sure why, but I'll take it.-
Start stumbling , giving thumbs up if you want to see your traffic multiplying.......

I've just recently started getting hits from Stumble, I'm averaging five or so hits a day so far. I think it's good, but then again, I'm relatively new so any hits are good for me.

su have the potential to send you 1000+ hits a day. So do not get satisfied with 5 hits a day. I am also new to blogging. Barely 2 months. But it didn't held me back...:-)Start using the opportunities you have.......

Did you / or someone else have submitted your posts to stumble upon? If not there wont be any traffic. And no matter how hard you stumbles if no one stumble your posts you wont get any visitors. That is why it is important to have mutual friends in stumble upon.

I get squat for traffic from SU, but I have a great time clicking that Stumble! button and checking out what other people like. Perhaps if I stumbled my own stuff more I'd get more visits, but I don't like to do that.-
If the posts are good enough do not hesitate to submit them . I used to do that when I first started. But now Some one always submit my posts to SU moments after I publish them. In that way I think I get more traffic.

SU is actually my #1 source of traffic (55.34%)
Also fairly good quality I think (3.99pages/visit).-

StumbleUpon gives me a decent amount of traffic, and it's not always throw-away traffic, either. Some stick around.
The most I ever got at one time was about 1,500 visitors, which took me by surprise, and SU will send a few people over daily. It's a great tool, and it's also fun to just browse around, though I don't use it as well as I probably should. -
I don't really get the whole stumble thing. A few people stumbled my posts and I wasn't even on stumble...so I signed-up but I dislike all those links at the bottom of people's posts...asking readers to click on them, for stumble, humour blogs, fuel my blog, or whatever.-
The links on the bottom of blog posts aren't really needed (I recently removed them from my blog, since, like you, I don't like them, and they felt tacky).
Most of the time, people will use the StumbleUpon toolbar, which is a separate download and used in conjunction with your browser. You also don't need to be a member of SU, or affiliated with it in any way, to be stumbled. -
Yes, I saw the toolbar but didn't want to download it ...so I'm not really using it to it's capacity I guess.
I agree with you on the tackiness of those links. -
yep, without the tool bar you are not using su to it's capacity. Put aside the traffic you are supposed to get, but you will find many great posts of your interest by using the stumble button ( I do not mean the thumbs up button)...
I do not see any harm adding the social book marking widgets to the posts. Imagine if there is no digg/ reddit buttons in the post and if your visitors like to digg / reddit them. The pain they have to go through if they really want to do that. If you like less traffic/ less exposure there is no harm removing them.

Meh ... I don't like the linky thing. I have a hard time keeping up with the traffic I have. And most of the blogs I visit don't use stumble either ... and I have over 200 in my google reader at the moment.
I'm just wondering if the traffic is repeat ... I mean do they just drop by for one post or do you get loyal readers? I like the relationship I have with my readers ... and the relationship I have with the blogs I read. So ... not sure stumble is for me in that sense. -
If you right quality content it is a no brainier that your visitors will become loyal readers. I have seen plenty of su readers end up clicking my feed button. (According to visitor analysis.)
My blog is just 2 months old so I am not yet getting much organic traffic. Yet I am doing well with social network traffic. Within the next month It will surely come to alexa top 100,000 .Already averaging a weekly rank of 78000. Already claim the google check, and feed counter is closer to 100.
All this thanks to SU, Reddit and Digg. So I have no complains. And I will never remove my linking buttons. If Problogger can have it why cant I ? -
You guys would really hate mine then. My little bundles of call to action are... I don't remember... 60 or 80 pixels square...
But, no, of course they aren't needed. And the way most people put them up they probably aren't very helpful at all.
But I took a pool on my blog and added the bookmark icons that my readers told me they would use. Granted for SU they have their toolbar, but the icon is there to remind them if they came in through another source, like, say my feed. It's a call to action and nothing more.

SU is great but it takes time to reap the benefits. There are some great tips in this thread. Gaining mutual friends is the key... Writing good content is the other. If people don't like your article/picture/post they are not going to give it a thumbs up. The more thumbs ups you get, the more traffic SU is going to send you!
Another key factor is to make sure that what you are giving a thumbs up to is quality. Don't just give someone a thumbs up, just because they asked for it. Other Stumblers won't respect your opinion if you give a thumbs up to "sub-par" content.

Great reply. And your blog post is a nice example of how we can encourage su visitors to stumble. But Personally I don't like it because not all my traffic coming from SU. So others might feel bit let off when you are welcoming only stumble upon visitors :-)
And yes, giving thumbs up only to quality posts is key... -

I just took a look at your blog and you have decent posts. Can't believe your readers do not stumble them. Sometimes just asking for it will do the trick...

I have seen many giants in the industry have done that. So it will not be a bad idea to try it.

I love Stumble Upon. It's a great way to find great content of all kinds, certainly not just blogs. You just have to know how to use it. You find people with similar interests and add them as a friend, for instance. I don't use it to get traffic though some friends have stumbled several of our posts, none have taken off in a big way. I enjoy it for myself. Both of us do, actually. We stumble other BCers posts and blogs too and don't ask for it in return or anything. I never thumb up something I don't like but if I like a person, I won't thumb down their content either. I just won't rate it if I don't like it.
*I'd be very careful about asking people to stumble your posts. Sometimes it comes across as very obnoxious and makes people uncomfortable. When you're on stumble, people can see if you actually do rate their posts. It can be awkward. If they like something, they'll stumble it...or not. I have had people on stumble thank me for rating their blog favorably and known that they regularly read ours and they still didn't reciprocate, as easy as it'd be. That's life. It's just not necessarily going to do much for you traffic wise. Use it because you enjoy it. If you get traffic, great. If not, at least you still enjoy it. Otherwise, screw it.
*Also, if you submit a bunch of your own content, it likely won't even count for much. In addition, some stumblers hate this so much that they will track down your submissions and thumb them down and you'll basically get the mark of the SPAMMER. Yes, it happens. That's why neither of us submit ANY of our own posts. People can be very spiteful on there. Then again, some people get away with stumbling their own posts perfectly fine. I'm not going to bother seeing if I can get away with it. Not worth it to me. My bottom line suggestion is to be a good member of the SU community, thumb up good stuff, add friends and maybe the karma effect will take place. If you've got good content and several good SU friends, you may never have to ask.

I have some friends on SU that I don't vote on their pages, but the reason is that I try to keep all of my stumbles within a clearly defined set of terms. While I like Mark's blog, I don't stumble it because it doesn't fit in the topic for my stumble blog, and I also don't want to train stumble to show me other peoples history blogs.

The thing I've learned with stumble upon is that the initial traffic kind of stinks. It's very general traffic. But as time goes on, while the traffic from a given stumble diminishes, the quality of it increases.
My working theory on this effect is that Stumble does zero prequalification of pages/keywords/users. They rely strictly on the votes and actions of the users who land on the page. As more users stumble through the page and vote it up or down or just stumble on without voting, SU learns more about which members will like the page, and starts sending it to more of them and fewer of the others. So they are sending your page to fewer members overall, but those they are sending it to are more likely to like it and stick around.-

As you can see I also stumble only quality stuff..I get lot of requests through su tool bar. But if the post is not good enough for me to stumble I just leave a nice comment on his site. At least I help his comments count :-) -

Yes, I agree. I only vote stuff I really like, and then only within my tag set too. There are a lot of posts I actually like that I don't vote on because I want to keep my SU "blog" within my tags.
I'll typically them a comment of a reddit or mixx though. -
Hey Dane - thanks for the knowledge. I had a few old posts get 1000+ hits over the past few days...it's been great. How do i see if people are giving it thumbs up? I assume since i am getting so many they are liking it or its just coming up a lot when click the stumble button. Is this a correct assumption?

I enjoy StumbleUpon. Initially I thought of it as a way to increase traffic and I did get a good hit on one of my posts a couple of months ago (very generic topic with wider appeal, and they did view multiple pages). Then I started stumbling from the toolbar, organizing my stumble blog by tags, looking at other stumble blogs and referring similar tags to them. When I stumble a page, I quickly visit the discoverer and a couple of others who liked the page. Recently, for the first time someone asked to be my "friend" based on my stumbles. So you have to let it develop but be active. In the meantime, I use my favorites to refer back to good articles and to send them to non-stumble friends. You used a very crafty title --- nice bait and hook (but you delivered on content!). People respond to catchy, contradictory or marginally 'sinful' titles. I like that you added your own review, thanking folks for their stumbles. I notice the person who first reviewed your post is well established with lots of fans and open to interaction. Many of the top stumblers don't accept email. Keep doing everything right on this one!

I have seen good results, although I can no longer post my own stuff. If anyone can tell me why it stopped letting me post my own info, I would appreciate it. I can have other people submit it, and stumbleupon works wonderfully, but when I try to submit my own work, it doesn't let me.-
Were you only submitting your own posts...? That might be the problem. You have to interact a lot with with the SU community :-)

SU has had mixed results for me, but I'm not entirely sure of what I'm doing. Probably a large portion of my lack of results, maybe.
I enjoy SU for itself...there's been sites that I've run across that never in a million years would I have found on my own, so for that alone I find it valuable.
So what we're saying is...the more networking sites included (technorati, digg, etc), the more potential traffic in the future?
At what point would it be acceptable for me to include my own content?-
As long as the BULK of your shares are NOT your own, sharing your own from time to time isn't a problem.
Though to SOME people it looks better is someone else shared it first, well, do you really want THAT sort at your blog anyways?

I haven't had much success with in terms of traffic, though I find the concept interesting. And I guess I still haven't figured out how to use it properly though I have added people.
By the way, do you know how I can check how many people have stumbled my posts?-
Or while on your post page, use the SU toolbar: click the 'reviews of this page' icon (looks like a speech bubble, next to 'send to')and you see the review and people who voted they like it.

It seems like stumble is geared more to visual crowds. I have no pictures and mainly just write funny posts about being an incompetent dad. To be fair I've only put half an effort into it but I got less than half a traffic back out. -
I don't think I've ever seen an increase from SU on my blog but my webcomics have gotten 300-500 extra pageviews in a day a few times. It's hard to say specifically because the daily pageviews can fluctuate by as much as 100 on a daily basis anyway. -
Twice I've gotten and influx of hits on two sites. Other than that - nada. -
Another quick point about SU traffic. There is a key to getting traffic from SU. I left this comment on another blog that had a great SU article:

SU is set up so that the “casual” surfer can download the toolbar and be off to the races (quite literally) in terms of surfing the net, relying on SU to “learn” what these individuals users want to see more of, based on their rating of T’sU or T’sD.
So, with that in mind, the majority of SU users sit there with their cursor over the “STUMBLE” button and just serve up page after page of content. So, the big SU winners come in the form of pictures or very short stories otherwise the casual surfer is going to hit the “STUMBLE” button again before they get too bogged down on a long post or something.
It’s just my two cents, but it makes sense, to me, based on what posts of mine have done really well on SU and which ones have not. -
another great thing about su is once you are a hit , you stay a hit.

Well, you have to have good content for it to do you any good imho. My most stumbled post drew about 3200 unique visitors, so it definitely can bring traffic. -

Wow, 3000+ views from SU? I was so impressed when I had 300 hits on my site from it, lol. I've been using StumbleUpon for a while just because I like it, and only recently got up the guts to submit my own blog there. I'm still getting a few hits per day from SU, so I'm happy, and I continue to try to give the thumbs up to good stuff whenever possible. -
I am not getting any traffic from stumbleupon. I know that two of my posts have been given a thumbs up, but by someone who is new to SU and has not stumbled a lot of sites themselves or has a lot of friends yet.

My stumble account is under review - ie i'm a shadow and my profile page is blank. I'm miffed as I stumble other peoples requests (if I like) but have rarely sent out links to the blog. No answer from the Stumble people. The only thing I can think of is I have been stumbling "controversial" topics, like chemtrails... -

We hardly get traffic from SU. Most of our traffic are either from search engines or referrals. So I wonder while we get good traffic from search engines then why we don't get traffic from StumbleUpon.
Is there a specific types of blog that are SU friendly? We have good articles on our blog -> blog.onesuite.com but seems like not SU friendly. -
SU is good for me. I do get traffic from digg once is a while as well as mixx and reddit.
