Such a difficult question! Imagine asking about someone whom you haven/t met and talk to! Do visit my dhammadelights.blogspot.com/2008/06/kids-messages-all-about-god.html
on all about God -
Well, as of this posting, the article I'm linking to is largely incomplete (I have at least an entire section to write), but...

This answers your question entirely, and then some.

Face it Kobra, us trolls came in and save this topic from turning into another endless debate.
Keeping George Carlin's faith, I'm a very devoted Frisbeetarianist. We believe in a soul (Like all other religions), but we believe that our souls get stuck on someone's roof when they travel up. Kinda like purgatory, but not wandering aimlessly around the planet for eternity. -

I don't really believe in God per say but I prefer to live my life by following some basic rules. Consider this:
If you live your life as a good person, not hurting anyone, being a good parent to your children, a good neighbor, basically following the rules of a good moral human being, and there is no God and no afterlife then you will die, with the peace of mind and in your heart that you will be remembered as such.
Also, if there were to be a God, whatever religion or God it might be, and this is a God of goodness like all religions depict, then if you've led a good life as described above, I don't see how such a good God would deny your afterlife in a potential heaven so, there.
You don't have to believe in God or go to church to go to heaven in my opinion. All you need to do is be a good human.-
" For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves,
in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them " Romans 2:14-15
You are kind of following God anyways when you are being good wether you like it or not.
Sorry to double post the citation but it seemed relevant

Yes and I am stupid enough to believe that He loves me and that He has saved my bacon at least 4 times.

Atheism is only as miserable as the atheist allows.

God says in order to go to Heaven, you must be born again. In John 3:7, Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Ye must be born again.”
In the Bible God gives us the plan of how to be born again which means to be saved. His plan is simple! You can be saved today. How?
First, my friend, you must realize you are a sinner. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
Because you are a sinner, you are condemned to death. “For the wages [payment] of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). This includes eternal separation from God in Hell.
“ . . . it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
But God loved you so much He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, to bear your sin and die in your place. “ . . . He hath made Him [Jesus, Who knew no sin] to be sin for us . . . that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Jesus had to shed His blood and die. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood” (Lev. 17:11). “ . . . without shedding of blood is no remission [pardon]” (Hebrews 9:22).
“ . . . God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Although we cannot understand how, God said my sins and your sins were laid upon Jesus and He died in our place. He became our substitute. It is true. God cannot lie.
My friend, “God . . . commandeth all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). This repentance is a change of mind that agrees with God that one is a sinner, and also agrees with what Jesus did for us on the Cross. -
ok heres a thought.. Jesus was around Ceasars and Pilot's time frame. We have black and white proof of there exisctence, coins and etc.. how come there is no solid proof of Jesus?
-
Why would someone put a rabbi's picture on a coin? Jesus wasn't an emperor.
Actually there is no honest proof of anyone from the past. When you die there will be no honest proof of you.
Photographs can be doctored, video can be manipulated.
Do you believe Soccrates was real? He never wrote anything. His students did but that doesn't mean they existed either.
That argument is invalid. -
Well, Caesar and Pilot were notable (Pilot maybe wasn't so notable
) politicians of the time and Jesus was a peasant. He obviously wouldn't get the "press" that Caesar and Pilot got. Thank God for blogs - maybe that way I'll be remembered if someone happens to Google my name hundreds of years from now (wait - no one will pay my ISP fee and my page will be taken down...but I digress). Otherwise, people will be saying that because my name didn't turn up with George Bush and Bill Richardson, I must not really have existed.

Here is an interesting article about the Messiah and how the story of rising from the dead after three days was kind of the zeitgeist around the time of Jesus:
A three-foot-tall tablet with 87 lines of Hebrew that scholars believe dates from the decades just before the birth of Jesus is causing a quiet stir in biblical and archaeological circles, especially because it may speak of a messiah who will rise from the dead after three days.
...
"His mission is that he has to be put to death by the Romans to suffer so his blood will be the sign for redemption to come,” Mr. Knohl said. “This is the sign of the son of Joseph. This is the conscious view of Jesus himself. This gives the Last Supper an absolutely different meaning. To shed blood is not for the sins of people but to bring redemption to Israel.”

If God existed it would be something quite obvious like the sun or the rain. The problem is that it isn't. It's not as simple as seeing him, it's just that I've never felt him.
Cheers.

i don't want to believe there is a god. i want to know there is. so until i witness some kind of miracle, like sean hannity speaking in liberal tongues or something, this is one guy who will remain a non-knower, and try to sort this human condition stuff out, minus all the heavenly hoopla.
having said all that, god if you do exist and happen to google this, give me your email address, i've got some things i wanna run by ya.-
You've witnessed miricles. Existence itself is a miricle. You just haven't witnessed the miricles you want to see.
You'd believe and worship a being that would accept your emails? No need for that, just pray. He listens and answers all prayers. Sometimes, His answer is no.
If you seek God you will not only know there is a God but you will KNOW God.
If you are not willing to put in that effort, well, keep on not knowing I guess.

Private shout me if you REALLY want to know! Otherwise, we can go on here all day and pick our noses.
This is about choice (for one major thing)...and you do have a choice.-
QUOTE:[MadameX]but there IS one truth...none of us gets to create the one we'd like.]
And how do you know YOU are right? what because the bible says so? You people need to open up your mind, study what others say and think, There are so many religions out there, yet christians are really the only ones that argue, judge, and are the worst hypocrites.
So if Christians can create their GOD, why can't anyone else for that matter?
-
I won't spam but on my Yack page I tell how I fell out of a window 50 feet up, but SOMEBODY grabbed hold of my ankles
-
@MadameX - based on your reply to timethief, I see that "outcome" wasn't the lack of choice to which you were referring. I still note though that the "disagree[ment] about which it is" (as you put it) is the essence of the choice that we do get to make - and that's a very important choice. We don't choose whether there is or isn't a God, but the choice of whether to believe is what I think TBR was referring to.
-
To answer the original question(while ignoring the funny lolcat pics)
I don't believe because I embrace realism. Some people think there has to be a higher power because life as we know it seems incomplete. It's hard for me to buy into the idea of a god when the story(any holy book) seems congered up for another mans gains.-
Realistic thinking is not a good enough reason? People are "gaining"(quotations are "fun") from it in more ways the "one". Whole some use it for closure, others use passages from that book as a way of attacking others.
The book looks like a complete joke every time it's used lash out at someone "in the name of god".

I totally agree with you there.
Realistic thinking?
I have a challenge for you. Take it if you like, but I promise YOU will profit from it.

In the New Testament all true believers, and only true believers are assured of spiritual gains through their belief in Christ. In essence, the said spiritual gains issuing to true believers only amount to inheriting Christ's inheritance eg. seated with Christ in the heavenly realm. Ephesians 2:6
What follows is a list of spiritual gains that the New Testament teachings allege the true believer can expect. It's in random order as it was compiled from memory and, as such, it may not be complete.
(1) Freedom from eternal condemnation. Romans 8:1.2
(2) Freedom from condemning charges against you. Romans 8:31f
(3) Unity with God ie. with Love - cannot be separated from from God. Romans 8:35f
(4) Direct access to God through the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 2:18
(5) Citizenship in heaven. Phillipians. 3:20
(6) The ability to find grace & mercy in times of need. Hebrews 4:16
(7) Being born again of God ie. the evil one cannot touch you. 1 John 5:18
(8) Becoming bearers of salt & light in the world. Matthew 5:13, 14
(7) A branch of the true vine, a channel of His life. John 15:15
(8) Being chosen and appointed to bear fruit. John 15:16
(9) Becoming God's temple. 1 Corinthians 3:16
(10) Becoming a minister if reconciliation for God. 2 Corinthians 5:17f
(11) Becoming God's co-worker. 1 Corinthians 3:9 and 2 Corinthians 6:1
(12) Permission to approach God with freedom & confidence. Ephesians 3:12
(13) Able to do all things through Christ who strengthens the true believer. Philippians 4:13
(14) Becoming God's Child. John 1:12
(15) Becoming Christ's friend. John 15:15
(16) Being justified. Romans 5:1
(17) United with the Lord and one in spirit with Him. 1 Corinthians 6:17
(18) Belonging to God - bought with a price. 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20
(19) A member of Christ's body. 1 Corinthians 12:27
(20) Becoming a saint. Ephesians 1:1
(21) Adoption as God's child. Ephesians. 1:5
(22) Redemption and forgiveness of all sins. Colossians 1:14
(23) Completion in Christ. Colossians 2:10
(24) Assurance that all things work together for His good. Romans 8:28 -
But, Timethief, all of those things are only valid if you truly believe--so those "benefits" that you set forth actually argue against Kataz's suggestion that this might all be manufactured to benefit men. Nothing on your list would be possible for (or probably even considered a benefit by) someone who was consciously exploiting the concept of God for personal gain while not actually believing it.
-
@timethief - good list. Item 24 should be changed a bit though. All things work together not for His good, but for your good, if you love God and accept His will. That's Rom 8:28. Of course, generally, all things work together for His good, so if you want to make that statement (or "allegation" as you put it) separate from the Scripture reference, I'm cool with that.
[Edit - I paraphrased Rom 8:28] -
@Madame X
Indeed we are in agreement when it comes to interpreting what New Testament scripture reveals. Spiritual gains are all that is to be gained in and through Christ and they issue ONLY to true believers. (I did some bold lettering above to make this clear.)
A true believer could NOT be convicted by the Holy Spirit and could NOT responding to the call of Christ, if he or she seeks and expects to realize any worldly gain whatsoever, financial or otherwise, due to their belief in Christ.
Consequently, those who claim to be Christians and who then preach "the gospel of prosperity and abundance" ie. financial gain through belief in Christ in terms of New Testament Scripture cannot be "true believers". Hence we can conclude that such people do not have the calling, which then means that they are "false prophets". -
Hopefully this will end up in the correct place.
@opinionstreams
Yo! Please give me a break ... lol. I'm operating through memory on a bad vision day for me and I chose paraphrasing so as not to turn everyone off by using lengthy quotations. IMO what is most likely to turn turn people away from hearing and correctly apprehending the correct and only gospel message, which that Jesus is alleged to have brought to the world, is lengthy scripture quotes, nit picking and inept attempts at evangelizing.
In other words, my objection to evangelizing is an objection to hearing an inept and bastardized version of the alleged gospel message.
Although evangelizing is mandatory it does not have to take the form of preaching and teaching. Indeed if one simply rises to the challenge of leading the lifestyle that Jesus is alleged to have challenged his true believers to live, then their life is a living testimony to the veracity of the message of a living God (example: Mother Teresa). -
@TT - hopefully, by the "lol" you understood that my "correction" was lighthearted. If you did not, and you thought I was beating you upside the head with Scripture and saying "get it right, got-daggit!", PLEASE ACCEPT MY APOLOGY! That's not where I was coming from at all. I thought I was just being helpful. Don't hate me
[edit - Interestingly, your post above - and others you've made in prior discussions - raise questions that I'll probably wind up asking you in private shouts. I'll say this out loud though - your posts always add to the dialog.] -
@dlowe
You're welcome.
@opinionstreams
lol
... Please understand that I am *NOT* upset about your correction at all and I do *NOT* hate you. I do not hate anyone. I do however, take issue with those who misinterpret the message and who unwittingly try to preach and teach when they lack the calling to do so. They do more damage that they realize. IMO they would be doing a better job if they simply rise to the challenge of leading the lifestyle that Jesus is alleged to have challenged his true believers to live, then their life would be a living testimony to the veracity of the message of a living God (example: Mother Teresa).
P.S. Thanks for the compliment regarding adding to the discussion. -
@articulates
My upbringing was not the "normal" kind of North American upbringing so in accord with that, what I wrote from memory is not really amazing. I take strong exception to hearing an inept and/or bastardized version of the alleged gospel message and I have a compulsion to correct those who go off course. This compulsion that I just can't seem to kick, no matter how hard I try to has got me into lots of trouble with many Christians, who were not properly instructed.
-
this has been bothering me for a bit. How come there is so much going on in the old testament, floods, bit of creation, people getting eaten by whales and talking bushs. The new testament is also full of spirited goings on. Then nothing happens for two thousand years. In those two books there was always something happening over their time period, then poof nothing.
-
i'm afraid i don't buy that. there are so many rules that have been swept under the carpet. If all the rules were the word of god, how come some of the various trespasses now don't matter. Like how you can sell you daughter into slavery (Ex 21.7)or you're not allowed to eat shellfish (lev 11.10) and yet similar laws are used to keep women from being bishops
-
Good question and thanks for the passage citations.
By the shed blood of Jesus Chist all sins are fogiven.
The book of Romans explains this very well. It explains the law as written in our hearts. It also address non-believers:
" For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves,
in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them " Romans 2:14-15
I suggest reading the whole book of Romans. At least it will give you ammo to throw back at Christians.
-
Until 5 years ago, I was a devout Baptist. Now I'm an agnostic. I won't say there is not a God. I just don't feel like I have enough info to say either way.
-
@ ttiger: STANDING OVATION!! I wasn't going to respond to this thread until I read this:
If you live your life as a good person, not hurting anyone, being a good parent to your children, a good neighbor, basically following the rules of a good moral human being, and there is no God and no afterlife then you will die, with the peace of mind and in your heart that you will be remembered as such.
"Also, if there were to be a God, whatever religion or God it might be, and this is a God of goodness like all religions depict, then if you've led a good life as described above, I don't see how such a good God would deny your afterlife in a potential heaven so, there.

-
To be totally honest… I don't feet any type of religion, or anything with religious connotations should be taught in schools, Education facilities for children should stick to the needed basics: reading, writing, arithmetic, etc.
(Unfortunately it can’t be kept completely out, what with the “historical events” of different religions and their cause and effect of then and now in many places, is also important...)
Why do I feel this way? Because spiritual and religious choices are personal decisions! And there are plenty of other places you can learn all about God and anything else pertaining to religion if you feel the need to.
Now college is a different story, "Religion" anything would be a good study… for those who are interested.
But! that isn't the question on this discussion.
-
I do not believe in a supernatural deity. There is no evidence that indicates there is anything "supernatural."
-
Empirical data is data that is produced by scientific experiment or observation. A central concept in science and the scientific method is that all evidence must be empirical, or empirically based, that is, dependent on evidence or consequences that are observable by the senses.
I agree that there is no empirical evidence of the existence of a God or gods and/or of "intelligent design". I observe that all arguments either aimed towards proving or disproving the existence or non-existence of a God or of multiple gods and/or of "intelligent design" amount to, at the very least, an exercise in futility that usually give rise to animosity, hatred and even violence.
It seems very clear to me that belief must be personally "experienced" in order to exist at all. That's why I do not believe that Christians or any other members of any religion are well served by entering such futile and potentially poisonous arguments with non-believers. Those who follow New Testament teachings ought to be well aware that any of their thoughts, words and actions that give rise to animosity, hatred or violent rejection in an unbeliever are not the work of the Holy Spirit but instead are "ego-driven".
As far as teaching "intelligent design" in schools go I am 100% against doing so. It does not stand up to the scientific test of being evidence or consequences that are observable by the senses. I'm also 100% against incorporating the teaching of any religion in schools.
It seems plain to me that what should be taught in public schools is academics only. At college level one can choose whether or not to take comparative religious studies but that kind of instruction is not what public schools are for. -
These experiences you speak of that believers use to justify their beliefs amounts to anecdotal evidence. Now remember that an "experience" can only be had by means of using ones senses, the very same senses we use to observe emperical evidence. So it is quite curious that the same senses one uses to identify these experiences amounting to anecdotal evidence, come up empty when used to identify emperical evidence.
-
"It seems very clear to me that belief must be personally "experienced" in order to exist at all. That's why I do not believe that Christians or any other members of any religion are well served by entering such futile and potentially poisonous arguments with non-believers."
I agree with that. Ultimately I think scientists devoting 1 penny to research trying to prove the existence of God is a big waste of money and resources.
"Those who follow New Testament teachings ought to be well aware that any of their thoughts, words and actions that give rise to animosity, hatred or violent rejection in an unbeliever are not the work of the Holy Spirit but instead are "ego-driven"."
Thats what I tell people when they complain because their work wonk let them put up Christmas decorations because their workplace is "Religion Neutral". Jesus died on a cross and you are complaining about not being "allowed" to put up a manger scene? Put it up and get fired! What a wonderful testament of faith.
I wouldn't have gone on this journey if I wasn't willing to die for my beliefs (and I have almost had that opportunity). My faith was built on my own observations and experiences.
I am currently writing a post called "To Some We Are Demons: Curse the Glare" Its all about the animosity that comes with being a Christian.

Barbara ... you are one of my favourite bloggers
And I think you're so brave to ask this question, (well brave/crazy it's all the same, really) LOL
And that's all I gotta say
-
I don't want to believe in a God as depicted by the bible (pick a version) As there is too much to suggest that he/she/it is unstable, power hungry, cruel, unfair and suffering from megolomania. Not to mention the biggest mass murderer in all of history..the great flood, soddom and gamorrah to name but a few.
I would prefer to believe in a 'creator' a 'Divine spark'
I would never freely bow to God as depicted in the bible, nor would I apologise for living my life as I have, nobody owes this deity any apology or thanks and the idea sits badly with me. I prefer to read the book of Enoch and believe in the tale of Semjazza and the fallen angels..and the idea that we owe everything to them and that they are now suffering eternal jail for creating 'modern man'..if your'e gonna go with an ancient story..that one's the better one and having been found amongst the dead sea scrolls, is quite a bit older than many of the text we have 'written ourselves' since!
Bunker? -
La la la...
I don't want, nor do I choose to. The idea of God as described in the bibles should give us all reason to doubt his/her/it's ability to rule over all of us.
And to answer your question..YES believing is all about what you want or prefer..that's why there are so many different Gods, so many different religious books and so many great and varied divisions mate..we make up the story we like best.
Did you skip 'elementary human psycology' ?-
no, I didn't skip psychology. Nor did I necessarily express any disagreement with you. I simply asked a question.
So, If I believe that after we die, it is over, we are worm food. It is becuase I "prefer" and "want" to believe that?
Strange, because I'd rather believe that after I die something much better then that happens.
So my belief that "after we die, it is over, we are worm food" is not really what I "prefer" or "want" to believe at all.
How do you explain this?
-
-
can we go back to icanhazcheezburger cats please. these arguments are going round and around and around. Lets be honest will anyones belief be changed at the end of the day
-
There is life with God and a life without God. Step back for second, out of your box, outside what you say is your life. Step further back being your street, beyond your neighborhood beyond your district, trying going further, beyond your city, beyond even the urban areas, quickly rewind/unzoom about a few miles skyward, beyond the state, beyond the nation, beyond the continent beyond the waters and seas and lakes and land and desert and beyond the sky, beyond the atmosphere, beyond the moon beyond the solar system beyond the starts beyond the galaxy beyond the universe ... Surely, You nor I can comprehend the greatness of our creator. Great is the mystery of Godliness.
-
I agree, if we do take an extra step we loop. Only to realize that we know nothing at all, there acknowledging the greatness of God even more. Would God be god if we could not question his greatness? We can question we can even think about all things we know about and yet our knowledge brings us right back to earth. lol. The mind is limited, that alone shows me how mysterious God is.
-
Timethief - thanks for pointing that out, its merely a question. We all have different views and I find it interesting to hear different perspectives.
-
I believe that I sincerely hope that in the near future, a supernatural being will come and wreak vengeance on us all for being such insignificant, narcissistic losers.
-
Maybe God wants to be left alone? It isn't like God is answering anyone back when they pray, kinda like when you call people and they never pick up the phone or call you back.
Perhaps we need to approach our relationship with him a little differently as I have talked about in a past post...
angryseafood.com/2007/11/27/god-loves-me-you-not-so-much/ -
the problem with having a discussion with believers about their beliefs is that it is simply a belief. it doesn't need truth to be a belief. i have plenty of beliefs. ask me about santa claus and i can go on for days. it's not too different than arguing with a pathological liar. it's what i believe.
i guess i should start to demand that public schools teach an alternative possibility about the north pole based on santa claus. -
Well, time to be controversial. Honestly, I don't think that people believe in God as much as they claim for 2 reasons. If you talk to God it is called praying, if he talks back people think you are crazy. Don't you think that if people really believed in an omnipotent being he would be able to communicate with us?
Some people tend to praise God for their successes and have their faith shaken when things go bad, I guess they only believe in God during the good times.
Of course I am not referring to "all" people but if you take the people that claim to believe in God and put them to this test, you would find only a few of them that actually pass.-
You are right there are some who do not believe as much as they think that they do. It is in the bad times that you are put to the test. Where you reach when you are hurting shows where your trust is.
If you are really a person who has faith in God, that faith will increase rather than be shaken in trials. There are many who do not fail the test. There are many who under pressure realize that they are playing a social club game and become real when trials come. -
I talk to God, and He speaks to me. People who know me and know my life also know He speaks to me. At first I do get that "she must be a nut" reaction, until they are in a tough spot and then I am the first person they turn to because they have seen the evidence to answered prayer in my life. People need to have evidence that God exists, we wouldn't be very intelligent if we didn't. But I challenge anyone who is truly serious, if you will really seek God, really pray and ask Him "God, if you're real, prove it to me." believe me...He will.
That's how it happened to me...no man, no church, no one else helping me.
The Bible has a lot to say about answers and calling out to Him, here are only a few...
Psa 86:7 I call to you in times of trouble, because you answer my prayers.
Psa 65:2 because you answer prayers. People everywhere will come to you
Psa 69:13 But as for me, I will pray to you, LORD; answer me, God, at a time YOU choose. Answer me because of your great love, because you keep your promise to save.
Psa 57:3 He will answer from heaven and save me; he will defeat my oppressors. God will show me his constant love and faithfulness.
Psa 38:15 But I trust in you, O LORD; and you, O Lord my God, will answer me.
Psa 17:6
I pray to you, O God, because you answer me; so turn to me and listen to my words.
Psa 17:7 Reveal your wonderful love and save me; at your side I am safe from my enemies.
Psa 10:2-11 - 4
The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.
Psa 91:14
God says, "I will save those who love me and will protect those who acknowledge me as LORD.
Psa 91:15
When they call to me, I will answer them; when they are in trouble, I will be with them. I will rescue them and honor them.
Psa 91:16
I will reward them with long life; I will save them."
I have experienced these things for myself and am satisfied and have peace.

This was a hot topic since I got the internet in the 90s.
Someone had to design everything that we have out there. The odds of everything just "falling into place" is so high it is crazy to think it could possibly happen.
I am an odds guy. The chance of someone not making us and designing everything out there is slim to none. -

I believe in a higher being, but he's not any one religion. To think that only baptists or catholics or jews are the chosen ones is narrow minded to say the least.
The bottom line is, be good to others. period. -
Certain people yes, certain religions, no. That's like saying all muslims are bad and all christians are good, or vice versa. If you're a good person, you're a good person, regardless of your "religion." If you live a clean life, don't harm others, treat others as you would have them treat you (all I needed to know I learned in kindergarten) dogma and semantics are irrelevant. and that is the problem with organized religion. it relies too much on dogma and semantics put forth by man (who was created with free will: the ability to lust, the ability to cheat, and the ability to give into greed.)
-
No absolutely not. I could go on and on about this but I'll try to make it short. First, there is just to much information that works against the idea of a god. Everything I know about science and evolution, biological and non-biological proves to me that there is not a god. Basically it just doesn't make sense for there to be a god. Second, societies have always used gods and religion to explain the things they were unable to understand or explain. It is now the 21st century and we have better ways of explaining things now. Everything that was once considered mystical of supernatural can now be explain through science and it if hasn't yet it will be soon. Third, think of all the different cultures and societies that have excited in human history. They all had their own gods and religion and they all said that their gods were they only real ones and all the others were wrong. All these different religions seem to counterdict each other. So then who is right? and what makes them right? Fourth, all through out history god has been used as a means to control others maybe that is all it is, that is it's purpose, a means to control. Last, We are now able to clone living organisms, we are creating new very simple life everyday in the form of AI and we are constantly improving those life forms. I'm not sure what my point is here but I just don't understand how a god fits in. Takes everything you know about the world, science, space, Panspermia, Singularity, Accelerating Returns Genetics, Evolution, the more you increase your knowledge the less likely a god seems. I guess I'll stop there

I just wrote a whole heap about my opinions on religion at my blog-
buy-tees.net/2008/07/hell-to-pay-t-shirt/
might cause a few argument but what the hell lol -
Some say God has created man while others say man has created God. Scientists say something else and I say we should leave them alone. Think of the population. The load is too much for one God to handle. Besides they must be having their own problems.
-
I am loving reading all these comments and seeing the diverse opinions. I really didn't know I would start such a big discussing here but glad people are willing to share.
Personally I am an ex-Christian who is rethinking her faith and am currently agnostic.-
Temporary Agnostic in Practice or Permanent Agnostic in Principle?
See The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins if you want the source of these terms, but I outlined them here: www.kobrascorner.com/philo/not-antichrist-but-anti-christ.php -
What does it mean to be an ex-Christian? As in you were once saved and now you are lost?
I can understand a fallen Christian...a Christian with doubts...however, not understanding the ex-Christian thing.
Could it be that more appropriately, you are an ex-churchgoer, and ex-denomination, an ex-believer in religion?
Because you see it's not about religion, denomination, or church. It's about being fully aware that by God's grace you have been saved...that is what it means to be a Christian...one who has a personal relationship with Jesus.

I do believe there is a higher power and I respect and am interested in every religion out there...I believe with Catholicism (which is what I am..but I study Buddhism) I think people are looking so hard for something. An answer. A reason. And Idk how other states are but here in CT it's more or less about money. And I think that is doing God a disservice...that's not what he intended..so to me its very understandable when people turn their back on the Catholic faith.
-
-
Rusky, I completely agree with your "ex-church goer" etc. comment. It's all about the Love and Grace of God and your relationship with Him.
Just because one of my kids leaves the house and stops speaking to me because he's a little confused or angry in no way affects my complete Love for him. I am just waiting anxiously till he finds his way home again, or asks me to come pick him up and bring him back.

Yes, I believe in God. I'm actually a born-again Christian =)

i dont believe in putting the fear of God in ppl.. why would we want to fear Him?.. i believe God accepts what we accept of ourselves and that can go both ways.. whether its good or not so good.. the concept of God to me is love.. once we can accept ourselves we are in alignment with the true Universal God.. one that passes no judgement and loves us unconditionally.. a great book to read on this is Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz..
-
yes the instilling of fear that preaches that if you dont behave you will burn in hell for all eternity.. i dont believe there is a hell. (no im not a Jehovah Witness ).. i believe we are already living in hell.. its rite here on Earth.. when we pass on our spirit ascends to paradise .. and that means everyone..

Hi Aprincess4ever83 and the others who are interested in studying Buddhism
Since you are studying Buddhism I thought of sharing with you some important areas to study sine there’re so many areas to cover. But if we can identify the essence we need not go into detail to benefit. I have been studying Buddhism for few years and I have benefited a lot. Before I continue I must mention that I do not have a religion. I am a good Buddhist and Buddhism is not a religion. Buddhism is all about our mind and nature. It is more like psychology.
We do believe that Gods exist. Lord Buddha had preached about Gods and there’re so many discourses regarding the communication between Lord Buddha and Gods.
But our main target is our mind. We practice Vipassana Meditation to eradicate craving to experience real happiness. In other words we are purifying our minds to get rid of defilements like anger, hatred, jealousy, greed, fear, repent, guilt and etc. The more you purify your mind the happier you become. Many around the world with different religious back grounds practice Vipassana and they’re benefiting. You can find more about Vipassana here www.dhamma.org/ . If you have any difficulties feel free to ask. Try to find out more about The four Noble Truths (this is the essence), ten perfections, five hindrances and five orders.
The other important thing is this. You need not change or leave your religion to study or benefit from Buddhism. Ever since I have started blogging I have been neglecting Vipassana. Better get back on track because even five minutes of practicing is beneficial -
Do I believe in God? Yes I do. The things I use to enforce my beliefs may not making many Christians and others happy, but these things are hard to explain away.
For example, I remember seeing this story a few years ago. A man just got out of surgery and he was talking to his doctor about an out-of-body experience he had. He told the doctor that he was floating above his body and saw everything that the doctor and his staff was doing to him.
The doctor had a hard time believing it, until the doctor was looking for his pen. The man told the doctor that after the operation, the doctor placed his pen in his breast pocket. Sure enough, the doctor found his pen right where the man said it would be. The thing is, the man had been blind for many years and was still blind after the operation!
There are many stories out there that go well beyond what we deem as normal. It keeps my mind open to all things.

I DO believe in GOD.
Being a religious makes u a more peaceful, meaningful person
Usually a religious person gets comfort while s/he thinks someone is up there for her/him!!!!
tinyurl.com/6jlknp-
rakhisabant said, "I DO believe in GOD, Being a religious makes u a more peaceful, meaningful person"
Can't one believe in god without being religious? Or is the indoctrination needed and is the actual cause of belief in god?
Also, my life has had more meaning WITHOUT religion. It's actually quite refreshing and clear.
rakhisabant said, "Usually a religious person gets comfort while s/he thinks someone is up there for her/him!!!!"
You nailed it! It is this selfish desire for "comfort" that drives them. Not "truth." -
I don't think your allegation that having religion makes a person more peaceful is valid. What I see is sign toting, T-shirt with slogans wearing, shouting, angry and nasty religious mobs in front of abortion clinics on my TV. What do you see on yours? What I have read on some "Christian" blogs amounts to racism, gay bashing and hatred of Muslims. Consequently, I find it hard to believe that religious people are actually more peaceful than secular humanists, atheists or agnostics. In fact, what I observe is the opposite.
-
"Being a religious makes u a more peaceful, meaningful person"
I would have to disagree with that.
Having a relationship with God makes you believe you are a broken person with sin in their life who wishes to be a light to the world.
Having a relationship with God makes you love people even though you can't see any reason to love them, even if they hate you.
I am not a religious person.
-
Faith is the antithesis of logic and no matter how many I would tell myself your religion makes sense, is believable and something I can set aside that which can be proven and accept the fantastic, it would just be a lie. My believes are structured around that which can be proven or extrapolated from things we can prove.
-
Well, the problem Bradhart is that there are many things that simply can't be explained and goes well outside our realm of understanding and what we know.
I believe that there is something greater than us out there. Who or what that is, well, that's up for debate. Unlike other religious people who find answers in the Bible or Koran, or other, I look at reports of people who have had unbelievable experiences, as I mentioned a few months ago up above.
It's hard to write every single case off as nonsense.
It's best to keep an open mind.
timesobserver.blogspot.com -
Oh, I would like to think that we'll find out some of these things are one day, but what happens if it does fall into the realm of the spiritual? I'm just saying, that's all.

I do believe in God. I thank Him everyday!
Let me share to you my morning prayer.
"God whether I get anything else done today, I want to make sure that I spend time loving you and loving other people because that what's life is all about, Lord please help me to do your blessing. Amen." -
Another Woody Allen quote...
"If only God would give me some clear sign! Like making a large deposit in my name in a Swiss bank" -
Well, many people has trusted god for along time. now I'm just an ordinary people, in my opinion if something is wrong how come it can last for such a long time.
So I do believe in god -
I'll keep it simple...if there was no God then why do we have such strong feelings and emotions. Why do we cry during movies, why do we love sunsets and sunrises, why do we write love songs and poems? Why do we LOVE? We didn't get this way through evolution.
JB @ www.thoughtsonmyday.com-
You are kidding right? There are all kinds of natural explanations for feelings and emotions.
Start with the basics here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotion before you start to even think about supernatural causes.

religion is simply nothing more than a method of control invented years ago to control the weak minded and further the wealth of those who came up with it. Of course it spread like wildfire, with intelligent people in each country following creating their own version of god and benefiting from it in the same way.
some of the most evil things were done in the name of god. so if there was a god would he even put his name to this?
answer me this, here in the uk, every single vicar drives around in a mercedes or some other high profile car and lives in a big house. If he were really a man of god, shouldnt he live in a small house, drive a mini metro and give all his extra money to the church or starving families in africa?
The saying "god works in mysterious ways" is just a loophole for religious people to get out of any complicated question you throw at them.
People laugh at the thought of aliens yet what is more believeable?
1. An all seeing man with a beard who lives in the clouds and has guardians with wings. Who happily watches as rape, murder and child abuse are ripe.
2. Out of Trillions of planets, ours is the only life sustainable planet with actual intelligent life on it.
I rest my case.-
Well, Comparecom, if you read my comments from a few months ago, I mentioned how many people experience many unusual things: Blind people being able to see during out-of-body experiences, people seeing dead family members and telling them that they're in Heaven, etc. There are just too many cases and stories to simply right them all off.
Yeah, I'm not thrilled with the whole "God works in mysterious ways" either. And I'm not too much of a big fan of organized religion.
But God did give us free will, free to make our own decisions. Maybe that's why He allows so many bad things to happen, because we decide what we are going to do. Yeah, not a great answer, but He did give us free will.
As far as aliens, sure I believe in aliens. Heck, if God created us, I'm sure He created others beings.
In fact, I've always said that God probably told aliens to use their evolution ray on monkeys to turn them into humans. Boy, most religious people and atheists don't like when I say that.

My life experiences make me believe in God. I have always felt that he has my back and for some reason I make it through life difficulties. That is my faith so I try to call on him more often.
Also because inside of my heart I just know that there is a God. All the beauty of this world can prove us that. -
i believe in God because He is my creator and savior of my life. To doubter of God, I have one question,- How do you know that you have a brain, can you feel it or touch it- if not. The same philosophy explains the existence of God. Though you cannot feel God, nor see him Yet we Know that there is God.
-
I also know God, I am just amazed that so many do not believe in Him. It takes a darned lot more "believing" to suppose that such an ordered universe could have come about by chance or by an explosion of gases. What does a seed have in common with soil? the sun with rain? yet all these work together to produce life? without planning? nah. I believe if somebody truly is seeking God He will show them the way. But don't expect His way to be the same as your way.
-
-
I know i have a brain because i have seen a brain after it has been extracted from a skull.
I understand when people say "I beleive there is a god" what makes me laugh is when they say "I know there is a god".
With no evidence at all how can you know 100% for sure that something exists.
Take for example dragons or monsters, there is so much of it documented in history, I think the only reason dont beleive in them is because there is no mass hysteria group following them like religion.
Say for example religion did not exist, or people had never heard of god. And I walk up to you and tell you that there is a man or spirit who created everything in the world blah blah, and the first thing you would ask me is "Where is the proof"
Back in the olden days when 'god was invented' there was no scientific answers to any of the really difficult questions so people were more inclined to beleive in the 'god' theory, I am just wondering would people be so susseptable in the modern day - I think not.
I feel that the reason people claim to feel the presence of god after baptism is simply because they are caught up in the mass hyteria brought on by their new friends aka "the god squad" who preach things to them and fill their head up with this stuff.
I do however beleive that if your life sucks and by believing in god helps in some way then good for you, its when people preach god to other people or categorise us as non-beleivers like we should be ashamed or something.
Just watch the god channel for an insight into how these people behave, to be perfectly honest it scares me.
I watched Steven Kings "The Mist" and I think that movie gives a good insight into how religion started. I am talking about the recruitment of beleivers into the womans 'gang' and how she uses them to her benefit. -
I don't believe in God, but there is no evidence that he existed. And which religion to choose? They are say they are right, so do I pick the one that is closest to me?
Plus I'm homosexual, and most religions are homophobic by nature, and I believe if there was a God, how could a God let this happen, amongst other things. -
-
there are 70 million people in the U.K. today in the 16th century only 5 million in the 10th century less than a million people migrating outwards from a central point [most people think India] this fact along with the hard evidence of man's history which lies buried [and doesn't go very far down] are hard evidences that the theory of evolution has always been false.
-
Not man's knowledge or wisdom, but it takes knowledge of aerodynamics to create a bird that can fly immense knowledge and immense wisdom. God not only knows but He can make Himself known, alas He has required that we must humble ourselves and become as children. The rewards are as discovering treasure hid in a field.:) Just because you neither know or believe in Him doesn't make Him go away.
-
-
I do. Because there's a whole nature around us, full of life and beauty. So where did it come from?
Second: why are this peoples of the israelites still around? They were there in ancient days and are well and growing in our days. It must be by the care of a god, like it is described in the old testament. Otherwise this peoples would be faded away long ago. -
OK guys. It's stories like this one that make me believe in God. A sick girl was expected to die, but because her family prayer for her, she got better last month. And she got better after an angel visited her hospital room. There is even photo of this alleged angel at the link.
www.charlotteobserver.com/597/story/431132.html
You'll be surprised how many doctors and nurses report about seeing ghosts or God-like events happening in hospitals. All I'm saying is that it's best to keep an open mind.
Merry Christmas! -
Yes and when you have personally been miraculously saved two or three times and recieved very many answers to prayer then you have reason to be thankful. But even Jesu's greatest miracles [like raising Lazarus from the dead] did not convince those who were determined to hate Him and His followers. And it is so today.
-
There is no proof that Jesus ever existed, his very existence is doubtful.
Were you present when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead? Were you alive in the time Jesus existed?
Books talk of Jesus. Ancient scriptures talk of Jesus. That is no proof of Jesus' existence.
History books talk of so many things, and many of those things are fiction, and not true. -
Books talk of Jesus-that is Peter, James and John, they affirmed He had risen from the dead and was alive, then He appeared to Paul and he talked about Jesus. And down through the ages of history this same testimony over and over again in all nations [except Arab nations-correct me if that is wrong] all cultures people say He's alive that He is God and that He changed their lives forever. See some believed Peter and Paul some did not, some believe our little witness as this and other threads show, some do not. A pop star rather foolishly thought he was more popular than Jesus but if Jesus was to appear in any nation today all the aircraft, ships and other means of transport would not be enough to transport all the people who believe in Him who would flock to Him from all over the world they would come, just as they pressed upon Him in His earthly ministry. And actually Christ's death is recorded in Roman history. And Josephus the Jewish historian but not a follower of Jesus makes mention of Him.
-
To you it's subjective, to me it's more sure than anything I know and you could not pay me any amount of millions of pounds [dollars]to change, and so believers have said down through the ages choosing to die rather than deny Him, because He is wonderful, He has to give what many people are seeking [and not finding] in other things. Anyone who has recieved tell it out to others, just as you would tell if you discovered treasure. And it makes some folk angry, while others listen and they too believe and recieve Him as Lord. it's happening today just as it has always happened. I know folks who have believed on him all their lives long and they say it gets sweeter and sweeter by the year.
-
Gentledove,
Ok, you are relying on testimony. Testimony of others re-affirms your faith.
Well...
Have you heard of the famous quote by Pope Leo X?
______________
"What profit has not that fable of Christ brought us!"
--Pope Leo X
(As attributed by John Bale, Bishop of Ossory, in The Pageant of Popes, p. 179, 1574)"
_______________
I guess you realise what Pope Leo X meant when he said 'FABLE' in the above quote.
Moving on,
Have you read any books that do a scientific search for Jesus?
For example, the work of Acharya S, who is a historian and a religious scholar. From who's pages I have quoted the Pope Leo X quote.
truthbeknown.com/christ.htm -
@ VikramMadan yes that is exactly what the bible is testimonies of people going back through the ages who have encountered God, He spoke to many of them, but there is somebody else who testifies alongside and that is God Himself by His Spirit. They do not re-affirm my faith, rather when I do what they [or God speaking through them] tells me do, and the message of God has always been that man is in rebellion against Him, He says you've gone wrong, now some people behave like Cain did and become angry and they take their spite out on believers. Me I never doubted that I am a sinner, the evidence is too overwhelming, so I say yes it's true God I have gone wrong. Then He points out to me the cross where Jesus paid the penalty for my sins and He says if you let Jesus wash away your sins I will give you new a life. Peter says it works, James and John says it works, Paul and John Wesley,Bunyon and millions and millions of people down through the ages says it works. So I do it, I come to the cross and with a simple prayer I ask Him to forgive me and gimme me this new life, and it works He DID forgive me, and I DID recieve new life. So it's me [by doing what others have said] who affirms that what they said was true. Not long ago I got into trouble in these forums and got into a slanging match with an honourable and nice lady, I said things that I later regretted, I was sorry, so I contacted and told her I was sorry and regretted saying those things, and do you know what? she forgave me, just like that, she said "let's start again" isn't that sweet? that's what God will do.

I was medically diagnosed of 5 terminal diseases at the age of 18 months. 17 years later, I was alone in my room and as I read the bible, I decided to challenge the claims inside it and trusted it's promises. That was 17 years ago now. I've never been sick anymore, never visited the hospital again, and never taken drugs for those diseases.
I believe there's God because He has answered my prayers spectacularly in more ways than I can count. Other people can afford not to, I CAN'T! At least it won't be fair to Him...get my point?
I'm living proof that God is. I think it's all documented in wdfavour.com/supernatural-healing and wdfavour.com/can-god-be-lonely
If you are honest about trying to find out if God is, begin by investigating His claims in the bible with an open, humble, and sincere heart...that's a nice way to start.
However, I believe you've got to prove that yourself.-
VoodooKobra, forget about the Bible for a second. Just forget about the stories in it. Let's look at claims like Wdfavour, or the dying girl that I posted yesterday who was visited by what many people are calling an angel (which was photographed by hospital security cameras) and she was healed. There are many cases and stories of people mentioning truly unexplained things.
Why don't you check out some true ghost story Web sites and you'll see that people report seeing the ghosts of loved ones telling them that they're in Heaven now or telling them things that the person had no way of knowing.
And let's be conservative about it. Let's say 1 out of 10 cases in any one of those Web sites are true. Or even 1 out of 50. (Trust me, there are a lot of them.) Well, using those figures, that's really something.
Heck, do you know how many voice recordings there are of ghosts? You'll be very surprised. Some are very clear while others you can't really understand. But the fact that there are voice recordings of the dead are truly impressive.
Hey, I wish I can tell you why so many bad things happen in the world. But I do know that many wonderful things happen too and it's not fair to close yourself to those things and only allow yourself to see the bad. -
No, VoodooKobra, let's not say that 0 of the cases are true, because that is not the case. There are many cases out there that are spiritual and it's not fair to write them all off without having an open, objective mind and actually reading up on them.
Now, if you want to have a closed mind about this, then that's fine. -
[No, VoodooKobra, let's not say that 0 of the cases are true, because that is not the case.]
Innocent until proven guilty, false until proven true. We must not assume ANY OF THEM are true unless they can be proven true.
[it's not fair to write them all off]
I'm not writing them off, but I'm not writing them on either. Prove it or lose it.
[Now, if you want to have a closed mind about this, then that's fine.]
Wanting to objectively prove extraordinary claims is close-minded? Not making assumptions is close-minded? -
VoodooKobra, have you ever read any of those cases? Have you ever seen some of the researchers or just witnesses who have pictures and photographs? Or even voice recordings of ghosts or videos?
I believe the Discovery channel had a great show a few weeks ago where they took pictures of ghosts and brought them to a professional photographer, who claimed that they were not fake.
There is a lot out there. Some are real and some are fake. I certainly don't believe every case. However, there are many cases that do make you stand up and take notice.

@ timetheif...
hey! I just want to say you really have some great posts in here! everyone should go back and read them... great thoughts and really good to read!..
@gentledove
hey if you want to check it out I have a lot of articles on religion vs relationship.. at jasonthebaldguy.blogspot.com -
@gentledove: no, that omnipotent god of yours who could just wave his arms and send manna from heaven down to feed those children. None of the rest of us, governments included, have magic (or the ability to make miracles) on our side. The fact that such a powerful being...able to save every one of those children with a simply twitch of whiskers...does nothing, says a lot about that being and none of it good.
-
@ sweetviolet
from that perspective shouldn't everything be good all the time... even if you are stupid and make bad choices then someone should always come bail you out and fix things so that you wouldn't have to suffer at all. at what point could that be measured as enough?
there are enough resources in our world to take care of everyone.. but it is not a priority! if it was then those problems would be fixed...
Its like giving an addict a million dollars... no matter what you do they will still blow it all on drugs.. they will never think to straighten up and take care of themselves.
If God just fixed everything then why make choices... why even exist?
those problems exist as the causality of other peoples choices- they have the ability to fix the problem and even we can fix the problems by dealing harshly with the countries that abandon their people. Also if the resources spent on getting filthy rich in this country were directed at those countries they would have thriving economies... so blame it on God or say that he doesn't exist... that's up to you... but realize that we have what we need to fix the problem ... truth is we really just don't give a S^&* -
I see...so some adults make some bad choices...like living for generations on poor land and choosing to be ignorant as to how to make the land more productive...and your god doesn't sent them some clues, he just lets them get hungrier and hungrier. Then, little children who have had no responsibility whatsoever for those bad choices starve while your omnipotent god, who could have sent rain or some other indirect aid to help their crops grow, just watches their little bellies swell up and their bones protrude and their little bodies waste away.
If you stood by, with the ability to feed a starving child, and watched that child starve instead of taking some action...if you stood by and waited for someone else to do it, or blamed the choices of the parents without taking action to alleviate the child's situation, what kind of a person would that make you? You can't even perform miracles, but you have a moral obligation to alleviate that child's suffering, if only temporarily, while you secure more permanent aid...like social services. Shouldn't the god that you claim created us all, have at least as much compassion and use his magic to alleviate the suffering of a multitude of innocent children?
If this depraved, disgusting god exists, it is not an entity I want anything at all to do with. -
how well you redirect...
you require a miracle when the resources exist to fix the problem!
many of the images that are piped to you through the media are a direct result of some war or conflict.
so lets say it rained food- how long before the government in Ethiopia figures out how to confiscate that?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984–1985_famine_in_Ethiopia -
IMHO the Judeo/Christian construct of god does not exist. If the governments of this world can over rule the intent of a so-called compassionate and loving god, who ancient scholars claimed to be omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent then it's not the powerful god that Christians claim it is. If this god does exist and if his will is being done on earth then he sucks bigtime. And if a fallen angel that this god presumably created has authority over this planet until endtimes then god is a joke. godisimaginary.com/

Governments can allow christian aid and tearfund and scores of other agencies into their country, I bet the Salvation army would love a crack at feeding those children.
-
Yes, I believe in God.
The universe don't exist by itself. All of us are made in His image.
Hallelujah !-
There's an eastern mystical principle that states:
"Aham Bramhasmi. Tat twam asi.
i.e...The human is a microcosm of the entire cosmos.
It goes beyond that, and insists that the entire cosmos exists in every atom, every molecule; insists that all is divine, all is magical, all is alive.
Perhaps that is the same as:
'Split a piece of wood and I am there....' [Jesus said that, supposedly.]
Of course, there is no evidence of Jesus (or any other God) apart from testimony of people who have been touched/healed by the divine...
When I say 'Evidence', I am talking about the 'Direct Experience', in which the God in question appears to the masses and removes all doubts of his existence.
For example, if someone doubted my existence, I would go ahead and prove it through a *public appearance*. Why wouldn't I want to remove the confusion?
Why wait? Why keep the masses guessing? Why no *public appearance* in more than 2000 years? -
@voodookobra
This may be what you recall.
This phrase comes from the beginning of The Emerald Tablet and embraces the entire system of traditional and modern magic which was inscribed upon the tablet in cryptic wording by Hermes Trismegistus. The significance of this phrase is that it is believed to hold the key to all mysteries. All systems of magic are claimed to function by this formula. "'That which is above is the same as that which is below'...Macrocosmos is the same as microcosmos. The universe is the same as God, God is the same as man, man is the same as the cell, the cell is the same as the atom, the atom is the same as...and so on, ad infinitum."
This message theorizes that man is the counterpart of God on earth; as God is man's counterpart in heaven. Therefore, it is a statement of an ancient belief that man's actions on earth parallel the actions of God in heaven. This pivots on the belief that "all things have their birth from this One Thing by adaptation." www.themystica.com/mystica/articles/a/below_above.html
As Above So Below
The ancient maxim "As Above, So Below" is attributed to the Egyptian spiritual Master Hermes Trismegistus, whose Emerald Tablet and other works were the standard of traditional Hermetic teaching. What is meant by this phrase is that all of creation, whether great or small, reflects the same Divine Nature, or plan. As all things that exist are emanations of the Goddess and the God, all things naturally mirror and reflect their divine qualities. For this reason the same Truth will be discerned in a galaxy of stars, and in a single grain of sand, if one is open to it. It is ultimately on this principle that all forms of divination are based.

VikramMadan,
I agree with many who have stated here that there is a question on the definition of a "real christian" The ones mentioned above waving signs with angry screams, I have to question. I see a real christian as one who lives out what they believe and your example of Mother Teresa is a perfect one. A life of selfless love to God in serving His children....she's my hero! -
Timethief,
Incidentally, the theories of quantum physicist David Bohm are very similar to the magical principles you mentioned.
He talks of 'Quantum entanglement'....which tries to explain as to WHY two tiny electrons would react to each other, even when separated by a fantastic distance...among other things.
The reason given is that the entire cosmos is like a huge hologram in which every tiny part of the cosmos has information about the entire cosmos...
A total order is contained, in some implicit sense, in each region of space and time.. -Wikipedia quote.

beingandquirckiness.blogspot.com/2008/12/faith.html
Faith does not consist in believing in the existence of what religious traditions call God. Metaphysics suffices to climb up to what Aristotle, for example, calls the immobile motor. It is a fact that metaphysics, which is a touch of intelligence beyond the physical world, appeared much earlier than the Jewish revelation.
Faith does not consist in believing in the existence of a first being, but in believing in what it reveals to one or the other of what the "immobile motor" is about. It follows that the religious dimension of man (etymologically, what unites men) is not grounded in any revelation whatsoever but inheres to human nature, since pagan intelligence can climb up to what antique pagan metaphysics names the first being.
Needless to say that one must understand what metaphysics is, and this has not exactly been a fashionable subject matter over the past few centuries. In fact, it is hardly taught anywhere anymore, although it once ruled and that logic, politics, rhetoric, etc. were all at its service. In short, to think that faith is to believe in God constitutes a twofold error, whats more logical since we assimilate faith and metaphysics, and just as common amongst believers than agnostics, for this consists in erring on the subject of faith and on the capacities of natural and pagan human reason.
At the same time we began to think that the soul is a religious concept, which it isnt in the least since pagans had discovered it, and in a very accurate manner, as the principle of philosophy of life, a real principle, which resists to death in the case of the human soul. We can for that matter if not prove at least see a sign that faith does not consist in revealing what metaphysics enables on its own to attain, for in neither of the three monotheist revelations is metaphysics taught, which implies that man does not need a dogma in this matter.
That said, in many philosophical traditions of the world and sundry wisdoms, the seven known human dimensions are as follows: the vegetative dimension, the animal dimension, the spiritual dimension (intelligence and will), work, love/friendship, politics and the religious dimension, that is to say the pagan discovery that man is created. Historically, it is the believers who are the guiltiest of insolence with metaphysics, which is understandable since they have had a revelation, and are thus dispensed of being intelligent, and it continues on to this day. The reaction did not come too long in waiting, and one must remark that atheism and the contemporary ideologies appeared in the realm of Judaeo-Christianity. They could only have come to being there, at the height of a scholastic decadence imbued with itself. In the contemporary period, Hegel is the one who lays the bed of atheist ideologies. And yet Hegel is not an atheist! Even so he is at the origin of the most mortal wound inflicted upon metaphysics. But that's another story. -

Now I'm a channel, so I get messages from "beyond" all the time. (My site's www.polarisrising.com)
As far as my belief, I think everyone's belief is affected by their experience. We can't truly know the vastness of the universe in our rather small minds. We just know our experience.
So my experience is more in the nature of calling it "Tao". Like the Tao te Ching. There's a vast interconnection of which we're one with. There's a natural flow. We are all one. I certainly don't believe in some guy in a beard - or any external being dictating my life. -

Although my faith waxes and wanes, I believe in God because I don't think the Big Bang was an accident. Accidents, by definition, create chaos, not order. Even Einstein could not find a way around the god question. He didn't believe in a personal god like the God of the Bible (which I do believe in), but he believed that there was a guiding force to the Universe; a god. I am by no means a stereotypical Christian, but I believe in that God. I think that Jesus was neither a liar nor a crock, and that He did what He says He did, and is who He says He is. Other religions hold Him in high regard, and even as an atheist I was never comfortable dissing someone who was never shown to be a fraud.

I'm a college student majoring in Computer Engineering (which is essentially the bastard lovechild of computer science and electrical engineering and contains plenty of physics). Unofficially and, until I can start filing patents, unverifiably, I'm an inventor. -
EmpressWingMay said, "Although my faith waxes and wanes, I believe in God because I don't think the Big Bang was an accident. Accidents, by definition, create chaos, not order."
1. Incorrect. "Accidents" by definition don't have to produce chaos. By definition they just produce results that one didn't predict, expect, or intend. They can and do result in order. It is simply the order of causality.
2. You are correct that the big bang wasn't an accident. Accidents don't happen, cause and effect does. At the time of the big bang what expectations or intentions were there? There is no evidence there was anything there to expect or intend anything, thus no relationship to be had with what one would call an "accident."
3. Einstein was a pantheist. His definition of "god" referred to nature and the Universe as a whole. He believed in nature. Your usage and definition of "God" wasn't a "question" or concern for him to feel the need to "work around." This is a poor attempt to associate Einstein with the term "god" as though it demonstrates support to justify belief in the term "god" no matter how one defines it. Einsteins position doesn't help your argument for belief in a personal god, it hurts it.
I can understand how your faith would wane too based on how you have attempted to justify your belief.

I don't look to any higher power to judge right and wrong (I just use common sense)...I don't condemn a higher power when things go wrong, and I don't thank a higher power when something good comes my way. But at the same time I do believe in God, it just isn't a major factor or a focal point in my life. Does that make any sense?

Nothing like god, but I believe their is some universal power to look after everything. It has no face, no structure and its at all physical. For me, what you do is as same what you get.Nothing is like fate ,you can get anything only when you work for it ,directly or indirectly. So, i never pray, just work

Hello I just wanted to add as I thought to myself, that god is a universal terminology some believe and some do not, the other countries think and use different terms, and some believe in more then one god so to each its own.
Just believe in living right now not hurting people its the devils work.
Also got to remember we live in a place where when we get a savior hey always kill them and this lets you know who has power here devilish people run this world, but we still believe. Our country is in more trouble then I have ever saw before we just got to get this place back in order because the news only tells what there allowed to say you got to know how to read between lines.

Well - God cvan be defined as the source - there is a source to all things that is provable. All phenomaena are the effects of previous causes, be they material or non physical (like emotions)- The Buddha Sakyamuni dealt with the question of god, and said he had searched the universes and mental planes for someone and found no one. But that it is not disprovable, and therefore not denied. The Buddha stressed the importance of self enlightenment - after the attainment of which, perhaps you can answer such a profound question.

Nothing about the idea of God makes any sense, has any relevance, makes me feel any better, nor does it make the world a better place. My consensus - The world is better off without God and without religion.
Take up Ethics and follow some rules of what you ought and ought not do and youll be good. It's your hard work, it's your time on this earth, it's no one elses doing but your own. Take responsibility and make it mean something. -
I believe in God...who created Heaven and Earth....Read your Bible?...who do you think created our world we live in?...people like me? nahhh...can't do that!....I will be inventor not Creator....Amen....brother and sister

At what point do I consider one to be an idiot when they deduce things like it's a math problem... like oh, hey look, there's a tree, oh hey look, I can talk... God exists! Seriously. How stupid does that sound? If you are going to make an argument about God, you should probably come up with something better to say. You just further prove my point when you open your mouth. No offense.
I don't know where you get your answers from, but religion and 'math' questions cannot even be compared. Because unlike religion a math can be solved. It has a concrete answer that can be backed by sources and by facts. Religion cannot be backed by facts because religion isn't fact. That's the point of religion. So saying hey look at these things around me, the answer must be God is just plain ridiculous.
If I had a picture of a Fail Cat, you'd get one right about now. -
I love these questions! The old 'what if' scenarios or the 'maybe not' thoughts of human beings never, ever cease to amaze me!
For the record, YES! I believe in God. Why? Because I've met him and her and conversed with the dual gender that God possesses. I have asked for things and received not only the items for which I asked, but more than my brain will ever be able to comprehend. Furthermore, I have also been disciplined by God and I have also been punished. But that's God for you.
I'll try and be brief: Until someone, anyone can explain to me – reasonably and rationally – how an eyelash cell knows it is an eyelash cell and not say a cell in the reproductive system – or – the little itty-bitsy fuzzy hairs that cover all of our bodies, the tops of our ears, noses, and unmentionables – how did they know to be a fuzzy body hair and not a nose hair or those little hairs on our toe nails, or how many cells make them up and was there a 'body hair' department, or even smaller, the General Cell department.
The arrogance of humankind never ceases to amaze me. We and perhaps we alone, feel that we are the most supreme beings on this planet. Yet, let's be real – if only for a moment – what has humankind accomplished other than manufacture more effective ways to kill not only himself, but the entire Earth?
Just one more thing: Humankind and their arrogant ways, hmm, why is it that people have got more excuses, fallacies, and fantasies about God who is a creator of things and what makes humankind sure God ever intended for us to have the capacity to understand what he/she's all about?
