I just painted my bedroom robins egg blue and chocolate brown and now I need some art for my walls. I'm thinking black and white or sepia photos, but I would also like to purchase some art. Thoughts?

The only art I use anywhere is art I like, I don't match it to anything otherwise it is not art it is design and interior decoration. So, in my opinion, no.

No - Art should match your mind. If the art also coordinates well with the rest of the room, thats just serendipity. Now, Decor is a different matter. If you are decorating a room and want to go do what matches, thats cool.

The idea of purchasing art based on how it would look in a room makes me feel like a cold steel straw is trying to suck my soul out through the top of my head.

Now, redecorating/painting/papering a room to go with the art is a completely different matter. My living room trim color owes its existence to the color of the frame of a Wyland proof in that room.

Oh, I like this question--I'm an interior decorator! Here's my two cents:

If you're talking about "real" art, i.e., artwork from a well-known artist, an up-and-comer, a gallery, etc...the type of art that would be considered an investment, then no. Those pieces of artwork don't need to match. But generally, if someone owns such a special piece of art, then I will bring other items into the room that coordinate, or bring out the main colors of the artwork. In other words, I would make that piece the focal point and decorate around it (if I'm lucky enough to be able to start from scratch).

But if I'm just needing stuff to fill a wall, and go to a store like Kirkland's or Pier 1 to buy "filler" type stuff, then I do try to find things that coordinate with the room.

Your idea of sepia photos would look great with light blue and brown.

Excellent advice, I am looking for art, but not from a well known artist, not in the budget... so I guess what I am looking for is "filler wall stuff". Photography and prints, I love framed type too. I was thinking of art relating to clouds, dreams, tranquil images. Thanks for all the great advice, framing and matting will tie everything together.

The way that your art is framed will also effect the way it works in your room. If you have something that does not coordinate with your room you can sometimes blend the colors of the picture with the colors in the room in multiple matting. Other than that, I have to agree with Kristilnauer.

Oh, most definitely! Unless you want to look like some sort of square.

This discussion is over a year old.

And you only match your art to your room if you have no taste and take your decorating tips from Holiday Inn. Art should be something you genuinely love, not because it matches your color scheme.
