Discussions

Welcome to this edition of our bi-daily thread.

Mission: Receive Stumbles on our newest posts, and Stumble without 1) digging through overly long Stumble threads; 2) wasting time backtracking from pages we already stumbled.

Guidelines reminder:

To make it manageable for everyone, please respect a 3-post limit per day for this thread. Each thread is "current/active" for two days, to be fair to all time zones. If you have the time, please check in on the previous edition to stumble later posters you might have missed - but, don't leave a comment (we'd like to keep the current edition on top).

No duplicate links, please. Duplicates defeat the goal of saving time. Please post different links (blog entries) each time.

Honor code applies. Based on our experience, members pop in here as schedules allow to Stumble those who've posted after them. We're a great group!

Your Stumble Club thread ambassadors,
Lisa and Adria

    thanks john...yours are stumbled too!

Yay! I've been waiting for this.

    Here's mine for today:

AB In Social Engineering? We Should All Get One
    afterlight.110mb.com/2007/06/21/ab-in-social-engineering-we-should-all-get-...

Here's a suggested description for your convenience:
Learn how to prevent social engineering attacks. If social engineering is a degree in education, all of us should get one.

    Suggested tags:
    security, social engineering, deception

    Thanks a lot!
    1. terrymundo
That is a great article, I just skimmed it but I have read Art of Deception and totally agree. Give me a little time and I will write a review.
    2. gabotron
Thanks a lot, terrymundo. I haven't read the whole book yet. I've finished the Art of Intrusion though.
    3. dharmagypsy7
Hey Gabo, I tried to stumble your page three times but it kept on timing out. I will come back and try again later.
  3. iluvmonkeys2
    gotcha gabotron!

    appreciate the suggested description!

    1. iluvmonkeys2
      well, that's just wrong!

      stumbled...
  6. johnoates
I've only been doing this for a couple of days and am noticing a definite trend. Apologies if this is well known but it was news to me... When I first started stumbling I didn't realise that you were not meant to review your own pages, and I had seen a few bloggers recommending that you do so. I wrote reviews for a handful, not all, to see what would happen. I got little traffic for them.

Now, when they get stumbled by people following this thread they do *not* receive a massive growth in traffic. So today, for example, I asked for 3 pages to be stumbled. The two which I had reveiewed myself got a trickle of traffic. The one which I had not reviewed got loads. Similar story yesterday.

So it looks to me like SU penalises you for reviewing your own pages. My question is - how can you remove old reviews? As far as I can see it isn't possible, but I really want to particularly as I reviewed my own homepage and it is getting very few SU referrals as a result.

    Anyone know what to do?
    1. terrymundo
I have stumbled some of my own stuff and saw a ton of hits come, but those things were Photos. I think that if you use the 'stumbleupon photo blog it' feature and stumble your photos you get a better results from stumblers since its a really good photo site.
    2. iluvmonkeys2
can't really help with this too much...i DO know that according to stumbleupon's TOS, you are not supposed to stumble your on stuff...

i stumbled my own as well before i knew i wasn't supposed to...how to remove the stumbles though i can't figure out...i went to the help section and it says to go back to the page and click the green thumb's up button again (returning it to blue) and that will 'unstumble' it...i tried it on one of my blogs and it didn't work for me because the green thumbs up was already blue even though it shows it in my 'pages' list...

sorry i couldn't be more helpful...
    3. terrymundo
Actually one thing that I have noticed about stumbleupon is that you need friends to matter. If you have no fans your stuff isn't going to go far. The more friends and posts you have the more the 'Thumb up' is weighed. I had this conversation with a friend of mine who is a huge Stumbler and if she stumbles a site it becomes popular quicker then if I do. This is because your fans subscribe to your content.
So the trick is to get as many friends in sumbleupon as you can. And use it a lot. I just past my 1,000 stumble point!!! I love the site.
    4. johnoates
Terrymundo: I'm sure you're right about the number of friends you have making a difference. SU will want people to get involved with the community. However, I'm talking about the difference in numbers of referrals when basically the same group of people (i.e. this list) are stumbling two posts. The post which I didn't initially review gets about 40x the number of referrals, even though the people stumbling are the same. I reckon (and this isn't scientific, just based on a few observations) that it's because the posts with my reviews are being penalised.

iluvmonkeys2: Have you found that the pages you reviewed yourself don't respond so well to being stumbled by others?
    5. iluvmonkeys2
you know johnoates, i haven't really tracked it like i probably should...

i only know this much...when i check my stats, most of the referring links are from the discussion threads than from stumble...so the truth is i'm not sure how much this is really helping at all...
  7. shawnlim
Hi, i'm new here. Hope that i did it correctly.

Hi - Came across this little beauty about the dangers of automatic link building - what have abstract art and halibut got in common anyway?

  17. terencechang
Every single links above this post are stumbled.....

    Great job! everyone!
  18. johnoates
OK, just got up to date on stumbling.
  19. josephlayden
Are we not supposed to post the same link twice in the same bi-daily thread, or does it pertain to ALL posts in this forum concerning Stumbles?
Here are mine, and all the above have been stumbled:

  29. johnko5057
    good keep going on
  30. JournalWriter
Caught up, finally. Thanks for all your stumbles!
  31. Translator
I think I've stumbled everyone! BTW, anyone know what sort of increase in traffic to expect from being stumbled? I'm sure it varies, but I can't figure out why. One of my posts got stumbled by one person a few days back and I got great traffic from SU, while my post from today has 12 stumbles (from this stumble club) and NO traffic from other stumblers. (I can tell by the referring websites)

Just curious if anyone knows how this works? In other words, how can you increase the number of people that stumble upon your posts from outside of this stumble club?

    Thanks!
    1. incinq
So far, my impression is that it's a bit of a lottery (or one of those slot machine thingys). Wishing everyone here a jackpot!
    2. JournalWriter
I also suggest fitting your posts into different topics. For example, when incinq first stumbled me it fell into "financial planning" and later I someone stumbled me under "investing". I think the more categories you are spread out into the better chance your lottery numbers are worth something. Just a theory though...
re numbers: before being stumbled my avg day was ~30 visitors, today I'm at 336 (my high so far) and have nearly 4 hours to go.
    3. terencechang
      JournalWriter:

Is that page under "financial planning" the same page as "investing" stumbled by incinq?

Trying to find the lottery number .. :-)
  32. johnko5057
Ya today look like no much traffic come in
  33. iluvmonkeys2
i don't have much either...but i have some coming in from SU on one of yesterday's like crazy!
  34. johnko5057
    ya yesterday like crazy.....
  35. jungl
Wow, maybe 2 days in one thread is a bit too much? Stumbling all of these sounds like a full day job
    1. incinq
      Hi, jungl.

The 2-day is to accommodate all time zones. Because of the 3-links-limit per day, the daily total # of stumble requests should average out to be the same. Hope that makes sense.
    2. JournalWriter
I'm with jungl - I'd be happy with a one post per day limit. that's still a lot of stumbling.
  36. twistedsister
Here's mine, I think I'll have a full time job here! Thanks everyone!

    totally-pissed-off.blogspot.com/2007/06/politically-incorrect.html
  37. twistedsister
I stumbled everyone above me, or at least I tried to stumble everyone. There were a few posts that I couldn't stumble. My thumbs didn't seem to be working. LOL! I will try again later. Problems were with TerenceChang, Confessing7girl, dharmagypsy7, Shawnlim,Johnoates, and gabotron. Will try you all again later...
  38. absolutelytrue
Got everyone stumbled so far. I don't have any for today yet but I'll post again later. My blog is being operated on at the moment so I'm leaving it alone for a little while.
    1. iluvmonkeys2
oh no! that can't be good absolutely! is it sick?
  39. shawnlim
    ok.. i've stumble everyone aboved.

don really know how this things work tho.
getting stumbled, then will boost traffic from SU? what does this mean?
    1. iluvmonkeys2
in theory it means people will find your page/posts through SU and visit your page, increasing traffic, hopefully gaining new readers...
  40. terencechang
Same here .. all above links are stumbled ..
    1. derrich
I just SUded everyone. *whew* I just realized that I kinda supplied my links incorrectly (ie. submitted one from 06/13). Now I know. Sorry, guys.
  41. incinq
Lisa and I agree that, considering the popularity of the Stumble Club, it's a good idea to lower the daily link minimum to 1. We'll revise the greeting post of our next edition to reflect this. The schedule will remain bi-daily.

For the remaining day of this edition, let's be flexible and leave it up to the individual member. We can't go back and revise the greeting at this point, and there's bound to be some confusion tomorrow if members post before reading this far down.

Thanks, jungl and JournalWriter, for your input.
    1. terencechang
      What about me?

Well.. I have not said much ... :-) Two thumbs up!
    2. incinq
Well, Terence... that goes without saying.
  42. dharmagypsy7
Ok, all caught up... be careful not to overtag, members of SU community have been known to report wrong tagging and even give you a thumbs down. Just a suggestion.
    1. incinq
Good to know. Is it better not to tag, to just choose a category? What's a good number?
  43. dharmagypsy7
You should definitely tag, otherwise it will get lost in the shuffle... just don't over do it and make sure it pertains to the topic in question. it might be better to choose a catagory since you know it's in the Stumble Upon topics... but if you know i.e InCinq... it's a blog and its about art, poetry then you can put that... just don't go into SEO or anything like that. lol
    1. terencechang
You made really good point ... Give you two thumbs up!
  44. iluvmonkeys2
okay, all caught up again...thanks for the infor dharmagypsy7...good to know...
  45. shawnlim
wow, the list is getting longer.
    I've stumbled everyone else.

Whats the max traffic u guys can get from doing all these?
    1. derrich
Well, my server came to a screeching halt. But I quickly fixed that. =P
  46. kahlees
link me and I'll link you back... kahlees.wordpress.com
send me a message letting me know you've done it and tell me the link to your site so I can add you to mine
    1. incinq
vnrozier, I'd already stumbled your main pages, so this time I stumbled an interior page from each blog:

      yesterdayssearch.blogspot.com/2007/06/young-boys-father-sutton-surrey-uk.ht...
      vnpersonalwar.blogspot.com/2007/06/adieu-saigon-south-vietnam.html

Post different interior link to avoid repeats.
  47. johnko5057
Stumbled all the post after me

and this is my recent post
    mybloggo.org/useful-adsense-trackers/

Please put a tag of "adsense trackers"
  48. gabotron
    Stumbled! No repeats please.
    1. dharmagypsy7
Hey Gabo, I tried to get on your site several times yesterday and today and for some reason I can't I will try again soon but just wanted you to know that I didn't forget about you. You are like the nicest stumbler and supporter out there.
    2. gabotron
Thank you for your kind words, Susie. I appreciate the time and effort you took in stumbling my article.

Just keep those new posts coming and I'll stumble them.
  49. shawnlim
    Done.. stumbled every1..

    No repeat means?
    1. incinq
We all post a different interior link to a specific entry (assuming we've already posted the main url), to avoid listing repeats. This helps members save time by avoiding clicking on links they previously stumbled.
  50. johnoates
All up to date. Found some good stuff in there!

Here are mine for today (I agree it's a good idea moving to 1 per day after today):

    1. shawnlim
Hi, but i've posted 3 links here yesterday. can i put more links? cuz i see some of u doin so as well.
    2. iluvmonkeys2
yes, that's fine...you can post each day...
  58. celticbydesign
Will we go to the format of listing all posts in one message too?

    1. my post
    2. his post
    3. her post
    4. your post here

    That seemed to work well.
    1. iluvmonkeys2
not sure i'm understanding your question celtic...one person listing all of the posts?
  59. celticbydesign
Sorry, should have been more clear. I thought this post showed a smart way to do it:

    www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/stumblin-stumbles
    1. iluvmonkeys2
that's okay...i just thought i was being completely dense...but i hadn't see that thread, so at least i have an excuse :D...

let me run it by adria and see what she thinks...

thanks so much for the suggestion!
    2. incinq
Hmm. Interesting. Lisa, I'll be back in a bit. Have to run a couple errands.

    Mine for today:

    blogcabins.blogspot.com/2007/06/fletchs-film-review-paris-je-taime.html

Though I appreciate the effort to instill order, most of me thinks it's a lost cause, as so many people simply start their own "stumble me!" threads. Then again, I'm a pessimist...
  62. dharmagypsy7
I just noticed that some people will leave their post to be stumbled yet do not stumble the other posts listed. I thought that there was a honor code in this thread. I hate to point this out but just to make it clear.. to make it fair you should stumble others if you want to get stumbled.
    1. blogcabins
How can you tell? I'd like to know this as well...
  63. stocktube
ok, i'm done with the second batch of stumbling ... the following are done :

i noticed some have been submitting multiple times ... maybe we should set the limit or else it'll be tedious and unfair to others ...

is there a short-cut (fastest way) to check if your page are really being stumbled by others? just like the way digg shows now many dugg your pages?

    cheers ....
  64. kiltak
    another to stumble plz..

A lot of you might find it of interest also
  65. stocktube
yes dharmagypsy7 & blogcabins ... i would think not everyone actually stumble everyone here as well, but i guess you've to trust they are not that nasty, but then ...

i think we should limit the link submission, say everyone can only submit 2 links (for example) ... more than that, start another threat ...
  66. mrsnesbitt
    Stumbled one and all...
please stumble me today and have a laugh at the video of Wilma, loved by so many here!

    mrsnesbittsplace.blogspot.com/
    1. dharmagypsy7
Mrs Nesbitt, perhaps it will be better to put your daily entry rather than your whole blog. I have already stumbled it.. so I will post it up there for you

      mrsnesbittsplace.blogspot.com/2007/06/photo-of-day-22.html
    2. iluvmonkeys2
good thinking girl! i got it too...
  67. iluvmonkeys2
all valid points kids...i just know that my honor is in tact...i stumble all entries as i said i would...the rest is out of my personal control you know? as stocktube said, it's about trust...

somewhere there's is a discussion thread with terencechang's stumble tool that you can add to your toolbar...you just click it to see who has stumbled your articles/posts...

stocktube, we have decided to limit to one link beginning with tomorrow's two day thread...
  68. shawnlim
    Hi, i've stumbled every1 above.
eh, if can pls check c if i've stumbled u all, cuz i'm new in ur project here.. thx
    1. iluvmonkeys2
      yep, you got mine shawn...thanks!
    2. derrich
I'll be sure to catch up tonight when I get home. Hard to stumble from work unless I use Terence's trick.
  69. johnko5057
    Stumbled all..
  70. JournalWriter
I'm caught up. No post to stumble from me today. I'll be back in action tomorrow.
  71. iluvmonkeys2
just wanted to let everyone know that, after some discussion, adria and i think it might be better to leave the post format as it is...

though we like the numbered list idea, we're concerned that the thread itself will be physically enormous...each successive post will be heavier than the one before it...by the end, members will be listing 100 or more links...we think the 1-post-limit will help take care of some of the existing problems with the post length...

the other thing is that there are bound to be posters who fall between the cracks...for example, if we have two posters on the thread at the same time, and they both continue the list by making themselves, say, #59... well, that messes up the whole thing...whoever happened to post a second sooner will be the one that's copy-pasted and continued...the other #59 will probably go unnoticed, and is bound to be unhappy when s/he comes back to realize that s/he's been bumped...

let me know if you have questions or other concerns...thanks!
  72. incinq
I believe I've stumbled all. If you think I missed you, please feel free to leave a shout on my profile page.

I'm late posting my link today, so realize that not everyone might see to stumble. If you happen to be dropping by late, please thumb up:

    incinq.blogspot.com/2007/06/girl-26-miami.html

The new edition will go live in about 12 hours.

    Wishing everyone a fabulous weekend...
  73. dharmagypsy7
haha.. that's me! I love it Adria.. thanks... I was actually targeting one member who blatantly does this.. not by mistake... or miss one or two.. he literally does not stumble anyone else. So I decided not to participate in any more stumble trains. I will of course Stumble the ones I read often.. Adria and Lisa.. you are on that list so absolutely no worries but I am tired of stumbling blogs that I just don't think are there yet or I have absolutely no interest in. So I vow out gracefully. I have however Stumbled everyone up to this thread. Cheers

Stumbled allll from my last visit

Well done ladies for maintaining this post and containing all the havoc

    Here's my post today
    secretofunlimitedprosperity.com/35/law-of-attraction-when-should-you-give-u...
    Tag: "Give Up" "Quit"

One way to control the length is 1 link 1 day policy on a 1 day length discussion. It's cleanest that way. Just like technorati fave, sometimes you just don't get fave back and it's tough to check who stumbled and who did not.

Plus you can get genuine stumble and still don't get any traffic because the stumbler does not have any friends. So guys, go invite some friends :).

Hmmm... Since I pull out of stumbling yesterday. I bet that I have missed some people. I have stumpled over 200 pages. I know what pages that I have stumbled, because I have all the pages stumbled bookmarked. I can one click and tab browsing them.

As I stumble more pages, I have found that you are not helping the person to gain traffic, you are actually hurting their traffic if you don't stumble it right. So I started over again by reading all the page and put down review. It will take a lot of time to complete. It's friday, anyway.

    Have great weekend everyone!

Well.. I am going to stumble the page I like from now on quietly ... ;-)

    Hey guys/gals,

I'll be out of stumble connection for 2 days. Now enjoying a short chalet stay at a resort with family. I still have connection but without the stumble toolbar. Will return all favors accumulated when I get home. Enjoy your weekends too.

    Hugs
    Karen

      Karenlim:

You don't have to download the toolbar. Use the bookmarklet will do the same thing.
      www.terencechang.com/2007/06/21/stumble-a-page-without-stumbleupon-toolbar-...
you just need to login to StumbleUpon before review a page.
