Are you using Twitter to increase your blog traffic? How effective is it for you?

I find that a lot of the people there are auto-posting with bots.

I find it very useful to follow things like news and specific publishers. I have found some very interesting conversations and learned a lot from twitter.

I am still getting the hang of it...
  3. intarso
it brings a few people in
  4. loanadvisory
    I will try it. ^_^

I removed some of the people that I have been following because they were spammers. I also believe that the ratio of following and follower shouldn't be too far apart (for example, you are following 300 people and only 20 people are following you).

I am trying to figure out how to find people with similar interests and things. It's a slow process

All the way down at the bottom, there is a Search link. Click on that and then it will show you a Google-lookalike search engine. If your blog is about selling t-shirts, then type in "sell t-shirts" then you can click on those people and follow them.

Use tweetfeed to track key words.
I am training to be a counsellor, so I track #counselling and find interesting people

Blogaboutnothin -thanks for posting that 'search' tip - I didn't know about that !

I can't say I've gotten a ton of traffic from Twitter, but I've made some friends and I like it for up to the minute news and interesting tidbits. All in all it's useful for me.

    I'm trying it ! ^_^

I think you should firstly follow interesting people, if its auto bot stuff then stop following them.

It takes time to build up twitter following, just like it take times to get people to read your blog, not just visit your blog, but read it.

From time to time, with the free flowers contests we hold - tweet deck is worth installing for sure!

There are a lot of Tweeple in my reader demographic. I am finding that it is easier than I thought to find them, establish relationships, and promote my blog. I've been using Twitter for about a month, and my readership has tripled.

I think that as long as you can find your readership there, it can work for you. The only add-on I use is Tweetfeed, to post my most recent writing. Anthing else I do is from the web. Because I have a focused demographic, that works best for me.

I agree with the 2 points made that the follower/following ratio ideally won't be too disparate and that it's okay to cull spammy follows. Just keep in mind that Twitter is like any other forum -- the more helpful you are and the more authentic, the more people will seek you out and find value in your contribution.

I'm curious about the details, how would twitter increase traffic other than allowing your friends to know what you are doing ?
    1. MidwestMom
Promoting my blog on Twitter has brought an update on my recent posts directly onto the laptop screens and hand helds of over 500 readers in the demographic I'm aiming for. If I post and interact with other Twitter-folk daily (or even visit the blogs they are promoting), those are 500 likely readers. Sometimes, when a person likes what you've written, they will retweet it, meaning they will send a link to your post to all of their "friends" in the network. That recommendation can be an important way to broaden your blog readership.

I think the key is to use it smart -- not to spend too much time typing about nothing. No one cares about whether you are folding laundry right now or that you're shopping for shoes. But, if you pay attention to what "friends" on the network are writing about, you can chat back and forth and establish a relationship. Then, next time you post a message about your latest writing, those people are more likely to come by.

At least that's how I use it, and to good effect so far. There are side communities affiliated with Twitter, too. For my demographic, there is Twitter Moms. I got involved there right away and have even been featured on the front page a few times. That is an additional traffic driver.

I find I have to be careful, though. Just like anywhere else, you can't link drop too much or you will be written off as spammy. I just try to add value to my community where I can, and it is working for me.

I like the fact that you can post a simple message, and the message will get to everyone who is following you instantly. A great tip is to send a direct message to new followers, and post something that is thoughtful. Don't just say, "Thanks for the follow!". You can check out the person's website that is posted on their Twitter page, and then find something interesting to you and comment about that.

    nope! stumble works for me
    1. blogaboutnothin
I am have trouble with delicious bookmarking and stumbleupon. Could you please give some advice on how I can make good use of either one? I'm having trouble networking with others in those sites.
  15. Svelmoe
No - but I also mostly use it to meet new people.
  16. chrisdowsett
I think it just works with my friends ... and I don't like to use Twitter too much because it links to my Facebook and blog.

So it brings in a little. Stumble is probably better I'd say.
  17. LaMirabelle
    Nope. Neither does stumbleupon.
  18. roentarre
It helps me to some traffic. Not too bad at all. But it is like a generalised spamming device
  19. sandycrochet
I don't think it has helped with traffic, I find I am connected to people on Twitter I was already connected to via blogging. Most blogs have search things to find other folks interested in the same things; and so I've connected to the same group pretty much in several places. I keep hearing how good it is at bringing in traffic; but thus far I'm not sure I agree with that. It seems like an IM (instint message service to me), which is nice and one you don't need to load; but rather than 1 liners with people I want to get to know, I find actually visiting, reading and posting on their page works better. After all, isn't that what we all want? People reading, and commenting on our blogs...so if we want people to do read and comment, we need to do the same?

Maybe I still just don't get it? Twitter that is, though I did tweet just a minute ago.

    Happy Sunday

    I don't think so..
  21. codesucker
I hear such great things. So one day I 'tweeted' what I was doing every few hours and looked at it.. it was just about work, I'm a normal person not that interesting I guess.

And that's ok, interesting != happy

If you are a celebrity or have an interesting life of some sort (Alaskan crab fisherman) then ok, but for me Twitter is just like a thorny toilet seat.. useless.

Think it made my mom visit my blog though, so readership doubled instantly. How's that for increasing traffic?

If you like talking to yourself then you will love twitter.

Basically it's a quick and effective means of
broadcasting links to a huge number of people.
    2. PetLvr
it works great for me .. I like just adding my 2cents, without actually joining in discussions at time

(kind of like a stress release thing, or to break the monotony whilst multitasking)
  24. AliceAnastasia
Tweeting just these past few days, but it's already proving to be a useful, direct way to connect with new colleagues and like-minded cohorts.
  25. Kiwipulse
Yeah, I received some from twitter. The power of RT work very well!
  26. darren1985
It does brings in traffic occasionally... But i think most people tend to ignore the links in the tweet...

Thanks for the thread blogaboutnothin. Also, thanks for all of the advice everyone! I decided I would join Twitter, only to realize that I was apparently already a member O_o. Bah, ah well, we'll see how this goes! Take Care.

I like to do shout outs.

Hello.. I started a new blog a couple of weeks ago and decided to use twitter to drive some traffic. But, as some of you who've posted above, the progress is slow because finding people with similar interests is a bit tedious. I'm sure it'll catch up over time.

And whoa!! I switched on my mobile device updates and my phone was jammed when I woke up one morning. Spammers, bots and what nots!

I did have a couple of interesting tweet backs though:)
  31. Locateblogger
It just brings me 2,3 visitors, like BC more.
  32. zendersto
Yes it brings much traffic to your blog , you have to get followers as much as possible , never ending . Follow me on twitter twitter.com/zendersto

I get better traffic results with Facebook, where my new posts are auto-updated. I have as many followers on each platform, but FB is the better traffic pusher for me.
  35. wormcarnevale
i have written 124 tweets; and twitter has given me 55 hits with an average viewing of 2.4 pages with an average of 1:52 mins on my site.....seems decent
  36. mynameisingrid
I love twitter and I use it a lot. I'm a constant tweeter and I must say that since I have about 700 people following me, it has increased my traffic a lot. Don't know what I'd do without it.
  37. Spirituality
Yes, twitter gets me consistent click throughs. It's one of my top referrers after search engines.
  38. susiehawes
don't really know. I just post about things I find important or exciting.
