Because I choose to believe in Heaven and Hell, life is a journey to one or the other.

"Journey to one or the other" has a distinctly Lewis flavor to it--is that how you meant it?
    1. robertstevenson
To be honest, I plan to have an upstairs flat, if you know what I mean.
    2. earthandeconomy
Rob, I know what you mean but I hope you don't plan on having nothing upstairs in that flat of yours
  2. voodooKobra
There is no meaning to life; it only has whatever meaning you put into it. (There is no default setting.)
    1. TheHeathen
      couldn't have said it better
  3. ekim941
I find it odd that you live your life as a journey to death.
    1. MadameX
I don't want to speak for someone else, but I happen to know that Rob and I share a faith, so perhaps I'm not overstepping to say that it's not so much a journey to death as one continuous piece including this life and the next, with the perfection occurring in the next.
    2. ekim941
I understand the values involved and certainly respect you for that. Suggesting that life is a journey to heaven or hell, seems a bit grim to me. It's is always good to have that in the back of your mind but suggesting that the meaning of life is a journey to death would make me feel very hopeless.

      MadameX,

      Are you 'outing' robertstevenson?!
    4. clioandme
He's done outed himself with the language of his original post.
    1. Norski
You've read those two books, too, huh?
    2. daniel23
dammit, that was what I was just about to say!
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
Heh, sorry, Daniel. At least you're a guy who knows where his towel is.
    4. ckent27
No clue what books you are talking about?
  4. globalgirl
And the path is neither left nor right, but the narrow road that leads to life.
    1. daniel23
that's exactly what I think about politics.
    2. globalgirl
      Hah Daniel! Me too!
    3. daniel23
      mind if I quote you?
  5. chicky401
I say have fun and make the best of it. Your life is what you make of it.

For me, "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" notwithstanding, the answer to 'what's the meaning of life' is: "God put us into the world to know, love, and serve him, and so come to the happiness of paradise (1720)." ( www.usccb.org/catechism/text/glossary.htm#h )

I'd rephrase that, but couldn't get it much briefer.

I also like grilling burgers on weekends.
    1. machinehuman
      Amen brother. Aren't burgers delicious?!
    2. Norski
      machinehuman,

Oh, yes: especially now that I've learned not to incinerate them.
    3. robertstevenson
      I forgot about the burgers.
  7. clioandme
Something might be wrong if you're searching for the meaning of life on BlogCatalog.
    1. timethief
      @mark
      no kidding - *rotflmao*
    2. Norski
      markstoneman,

You have a point. On the other hand, there's a rich sample of humanity's experience here - I can think of worse places to start.
    3. ekim941
Mark, I searched for the meaning of life in a liquor bottle a few times.
      It wasn't there.
      Could be anywhere.
    4. robertstevenson
BC folks are philosophers. Who better to ask?
    5. clioandme
Philosopher is one word for it. Remember the line in Mel Brooks. "History of the World, Part I"? I paraphrase from memory:

      - Occupation?
      - Standup philosopher.
      - Oh, you mean you're a bullshit artist.

Edit: found it on youtube. Go about 1:20 into the clip. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPy0wxIdiGw

sex drugs and rock and roll.
  9. DrBurst
To leave the world better then when you came into it.
    1. Norski
A fine goal. I've been having a shot at that: my biggest contribution (with substantial assistance from my wife) may be our children. Time will tell.
    2. machinehuman
      Nice one DrBurst
    3. morgantj
How does one know what is "better" for the world?
  10. robertstevenson
Borrowing from three other BS threads, and in a slightly relevant response to this thread, baking soda could be the meaning of life! See: Baking Soda Could Save The World.

    1. robertstevenson
      Funny, Stoneman.
Sorry it took so long to respond, I was waxing philosophic about Bea Arthur.
  11. BassDem
The extent to which you can withstand death.

I suppose baking soda might play a role in the epic struggle between life and death if you have a good arm and a full can.

If the journey ends in Heaven, can I still spend my vacation in Hell?
    1. robertstevenson
Maybe for good behavior, well get a pass to visit our friends. : )
  12. DocNicole
I have no clue! But just in case there is a God I am trying to behave myself.

"... the hours in between birth and death..."

When the bar room bouncer gets drunk, who throws him out? Ask any bartender, "Quick, what's the meaning of life, in 25 words or less?" and he will tell you. The answer will jump out of a liquor bottle and hit you right between the eyes.
    1. Jeunelle
This is the most truthful of all the answers here
and it does hit you right between the eyes.
      Excellent Jackpayne

Bartenders and beauticians: I bet they could shed some light on this discussion.

    Life?
    be right back...
  17. myriadlife
Must be quite awful really believing you're going to end up in heaven or hell. How black and white. Still I suppose it could be worse - limbo would be really dull.
  18. kath
To have Jesus Christ is to have eternal life.
  19. myriadlife
Really? I think we probably have it anyway and if not I might be glad of the rest.
  20. cndflix
    the life has two meanings:
    1. To share...
    2. To act with solidarity...

    thanks.
  21. cazywaz
    42... best "trilogy" ever!
  22. ckent27
I have always loved the meaning-of-life-explanation from the movie "City Slickers." It is so true.

Curly: Do you know what the secret of life is?
    [holds up one finger]
    Curly: This.
    Mitch: Your finger?
Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and the rest don't mean shit.
Mitch: But, what is the "one thing?"
Curly: [smiles] That's what *you* have to find out.
