Why I hate blogger blogs

For the life of me I cannot understand why anyone would use blogger as a platform for writing their blog.
When reading a blog, I see the blogger favicon in the tab bar and I shudder. Why... Here's why: -
Writing a comment is a nightmare. You spend 5 minutes entering the correct captcha, and then to add insult to injury, once the captcha is correct, the post is then held for moderation (double moderation) - Why?
If you don't have a google blogger account then the reader is screwed. Some bloggers only have this option available in the comments section. I want to leave my signature in my comment, not my google blogger signature ffs.
I want to be able to write a comment on a blog, then leave. Why do blogger blogs make life so blooming difficult. Grrrrr
I might start a campaign. Ban blogger blogs :-)
Blogs are all about encouraging comments and interaction, not scaring your readers away by making the commenting process similar to breaking into Fort bloody Knox.
I feel better now. :-)

Blogger has had a new comment box option that is really pretty cool you should check it out...not many are aware of it but as it becomes more popular you will see more and more of it.

Your frustration isn't with blogspot - but rather with bloggers who choose to use captcha and comment moderation.
You can leave a comment on my blog using whatever way you choose, no moderation, no captcha, no fuss no muss. -
Captcha is a choice by some bloggers, not an absolute. You can change it in your settings to include, or not include.
As for leaving your signature in your comment, I think you might have a lot of Blogger users and non-Blogger users alike not appreciating that very much.
If your sole purpose of commenting is the linkluv, folks looking for readers-- real readers who care what they have to say, and don't just want to promote themselves alone-- might see the situation from a very different perspective.-
Yes, but what is the incentive of a blogger-- on any platform-- to post a comment clearly made only to get linkbacks? If the comment adds value to a discussion, it's one thing.
This has nothing to do with a Blogger old boy's network as much as overall Netiquette.
I get the vague impression you're determined for some reason to dislike Blogger blogs in spite of the Blogger myth-busting information folks here are trying to give you.
And I can't quite figure out what that is, unless you're just purposefully trying to stir things up for the controversy. Which seems counter-productive to me.
-
Those are all options set by the blogger (pun intended.) You can have a Blogger blog with no CAPTCHA, no moderation, with anyone (even those without a Google account) able to comment.
-
@wigwam2theorem
This is the way it should. My original point is simple - why do the majority of blogger accounts make it difficult to post a comment. That is all my point was/is.
@ThriftShopRomantic
"And I can't quite figure out what that is, unless you're just purposefully trying to stir things up for the controversy. Which seems counter-productive to me."
??? - I am NOT trying to stir things up. I was simply trying to let people know the problems non-google owned bloggers have when 'trying' to write a comment. If I wanted to stir things up, then I would rant about my polytheistic, misogynistic, racist slurs. But I don't.
I hope this post has helped the google owned bloggers out there understand why they perhaps don't receive as many comments as they feel they should, and that they should explore their moderation options more closely.
The blogger who has it spot on is tatasmagik
"I use Blogger. I don't use captcha. I moderate comments. I allow anonymous comments. Comment box that requires no extra clicking, I also have a favicon."
Regards
Moi
-
I don't moderate my comments at all i only delete afterwards if it is beyond the semblance of reasonable commentary.
-
I switched away from Blogger, but not for any of the reasons up top. The platform is pretty flexible, and users can change how their blog commenting system works. Blogger users can also check out Blogger in Draft, which gets new features first. draft.blogger.com/
I switched because Blogger doesn't know how to communicate with its customers, but that's a separate issue.
Stop hating on Blogger bloggers. Otherwise you're going to miss out on some good blogs. -
Just tried leaving a comment on your blog.
However... Options for comment as, are google account, live journal, wordpress, typepad, aim, and openID
I have none of those accounts, I also noticed the captcha popping up when submitting my comment.
Suffice to say I did not leave a comment in the end, too much effort.
I wonder how many bloggers lose traffic this way??? How many of the top blogs use blogger. I bet it's zero.
Sorry gingerbeer, I did try to leave a comment. -
Please don't start the campaign, my blog would be eliminated!
I like blogger. I have the option of removing the tool bar but I chose not to. They host my stuff at no charge, so to me the least I can do is let them show their name across the top. Takes no more room than my adsense. Plus it helps with my navigation.
As for the comments, I think it is a mere and minor inconvience for someone who wants to lessen spam and mischief.-
I don't have many readers in the first place but the ones I do have I think are genuinely interested. I allow anonymous comments but frankly, just because one can't put their two cents in shouldn't stop one from reading.(my theory anyways) I'm reading to hear the author speak, not myself.
I agree with you that comments support dialog, I'm just saying blogger has not done me wrong yet and I like it.
-
I like blogger, its really easy to use especially for people that dont want to fuss with learning huge amounts of HTML. Very easy to move things around and pretty easy to find new templates not offered by blogger and thus implement them.
buzz buzz -
Well, I won't say what everyone else said, which is it's not blogger it's the way the individual blogger has their comments section set up. (okay I just did say it again)
Personally, I don't like leaving comments on wordpress blogs because I have to click, type everything ... name, email, link...and then click...and then hit the back button to go back to the blog to read more. If they have the security code thing I have to try a couple of times to get that right, then wordpress tells me I'm making a duplicate comment ... lol ... Quite often I just don't bother or after I finally leave a comment I don't bother clicking the back button to go back to the blog to read anymore.
So, I think it has to do with different platforms just not being compatible.
And I love blogger
edit: I don't like bloggers new comment section tho ... and I prefer when the comments are in a pop up box because otherwise after you're done you're left with just that one post on your screen. So then I have to go "back" to get to the blog. And I find that frustrating. With the pop up box you can comment, close the box and the entire blog is still their on your screen. -
I use Blogger, and I love it. I use a captcha, but no comment moderation, and I allow people to comment anonymously.
I also have my own favicon!
I love Blogger because my key words from posts show up on Google very quickly...and generally ranked VERY high. For that reason alone, I'll never switch.-
The little picture you can see in front of the URL in your browser's address bar. (It also shows in your browser's bookmarks.)
Edited to add: I don't have one on my Wordpress blogs, but check out this: commonplacing.tumblr.com -
weblogian.com/blog/?p=415
You'll need to download the small program that he has linked in the article. But that program is the absolute easiest thing to use. Simply drag and drop your picture onto the square, and it changes it to a favicon. Then follow the directions to add to your blog. -
-
It is! It's a tiny red chair. I wonder why you can't see it.
Go here www.addicted2decorating.com Can you see it there?
-
Captcha's are to deflect spammers.
If you're serious about leaving a comment, you'll go through the captcha, but if you're a spammer, you're most likely goin to move on to the next blog.
Blogger is fine for me.
It seems to meet all of my needs.
-
I read somewhere that blogger content is owned by Google. If this is true, then why write content for someone else?
-
Okay, SolReka ... I just went to your blog. When I click the link to make a comment I'm taken to a page away from your blog, a page that just has that one post on it.
Then I have to type in my Name, Email and Website Address.
Then...there I am, on a page that's not your blog. So ... I have to hit the back button at least twice to get back to view your entire blog.
How's that any less complicated than commenting on my blog? Where you get a nice pop-up where you can leave your comment, and you're not taken away from my main page.-
No, it stays with your original post. It's just I can't see any other posts. Just that one I'm commenting on.
Some blogger comments are set up this way too, it seems to be the new thing. But I don't like it because I think it's a bad idea to comment and then be left on a page only able to see the one post you just read and commented on. What's the point of that? To see any other posts I have to hit the back button or click your "home" link. I find it annoying.
Overall, it's not good for any blog because you have your commentors left with just that one post on the screen. They've already read it.
-
I love blogger..I used blogono from wordpress before and i just don't know why only few can view my site...my comments and posts were wasted and so i made another one with blogger and so far i am happy.
I use captcha to avoid robots from leaving me stupid comments.
Anyway, I'd like you to refer me to any kind of free blogging sites that is easy to navigate.
And..it's true. Blogger is owned by Google. I guess google doesn't need to prove anything. Giving freedom for their bloggers to write anything is a benefit for them. -
-
@DrowseyMonkey
I was under the impression ALL blogs did this. You click on a post to read more, then you leave a comment at the bottom.
If you wish to read other posts, then you either click on the most popular posts or use the back button.
Is this not the norm? Heck am I doing it all wrong :-) -
Come by my blogger blog and check it out - no problems like that!

It is all how you set it up
(edited) and it is a blogger set up -
Hi Check out my BLOGGER blog and see if it is that bad...
www.charlotteprincess.blogspot.com
it's the skill of the blogger not the platform -
All my blogs are Blogger blogs. I tried Wordpress for a couple of days and hated it. I like that Blogger gives direct access to the templates which allows the blogger to do anything he/she can imagine.
Most of your claims have nothing to do with Blogger. As people already mentioned they are a blogger's decision. I used to do no verification or moderation, but since have redone my blogs and went with moderation. Comments have lessened greatly, but mostly I lose the "haha" type of comments. People that have something to say generally leave a comment.
I've got seven blogs and one that serves as a portal. Some use generic blogger templates modified slightly, others use templates that were completely rewritten. I really haven't spent a huge amount of time on my blog designs but I think they've come out decent. The only thing that really identifies them as Blogger blogs is the URL (and maybe some people will recognize a couple of stock templates slightly modified).
So I really don't understand complaints about Blogger. They've given me a free service that works great from my perspective. I'm able to do a lot without paying a dime.
gregbecerra.blogspot.com/ -
the captcha requirement and moderation requirement setting by the blog owner. come to my blog investinternals.blogspot.com and try to comment. there is no captcha and no moderation. comment will post immediately. This is an added security and if you want to use or can forget.
there are option to remove the blogger favicon as well as tab bar. my above said blog is example for that also. No favicon and no tab.
comments section settings is depends on the blog owner as I said earlier. Generally, it is not a best practice of having an option to ask readers to log first to comment. In my personal opinion, if I found such site or blog I will never go back to that blog/site again. Also, as a part of best optimization, experts advice that to remove these options from new bloggers blogs. Let readers frequently comment. I agree with you that, comment setting to ask login before commenting is a very very bad practice which can lead readers leave and avoid the site immediately.
thanks for your doubts and hope you will take my comments with good meaning

I wrote a very basic tutorial for blogger users a while back that tells them exactly where to find their comment settings. Hope it's of use to anyone who reads it;
www.carlgalloway.com/archives/380-Blogspot-users,-enable-comments-for-all.h... -
We used to have everything wide open and got few comments except for some Ron Paul 2008ers, lol. Then we got some anti-Semitic remark on an Einstein quote post and I set it up so that I had to approve a comment before it's published. I do approve them as soon as I see them in the mailbox alert though...as long as they aren't particularly SPAMMY or overtly racist. Particularly SPAMMY as in not alluding to the post or blog at all but saying ''Hey, man! Go to pimpyassparty.com!'' or something like that.
~JD -
When I first started my Blogger blog, I left the comments wide open.
After suffering a prolonged spam attack, I had to add the captcha.
After a rude stalker showed up on my blog, I had to add the moderation.
Thank goodness Blogger provides these abilities!
I don't think I'm losing readers by having these things in place as they do nothing to deter a person from reading. But I am losing spammers and at least one crude, rude person, which is fine with me.
BTW...anyone who leaves a comment that really doesn't relate to the blog entry but does include his own URL is spamming, no matter what euphemism they may call it. -
All the things you mentioned are options on Blogger. I don't have word verification or comment moderation on my blog. Anyone is invited to comment and if I get a spam (rare) or a jerk (even more rare, most people are really cool) I just hit delete.
I had Typepad and loved it, but it cost $$$$ so I switched to Blogger
-
I changed the comment system on my blogger blog, and have no Blogger icon logo at the top. So everything you said can be changed.

what i didn't like about blogger is blogspot.com domain name all other stuffs in blogger is cool.i think it is much better than wordpress or other hosters

I use dofollow and commentluv cause I love ppl visiting my blog. I also use akismet for the spam/splog. Visit and comment

True to say that I too just shudder 'not blogger again'. But I came across a fellow blogger using this blogging system - who'd cracked the commenting code. www.paulshealthblog.com - makes commenting on a blogger blog so much more pleasurable - he and his wife do have easy on the eye blogs, that often get the grey matter working too.
-
I use blogger and as others here have mentioned the best part about it is that it's free. I replaced blogger's favicon with my own and I customized the template to my liking. Plus, whenever I've run into problems I always find a solution in the blogger group help section.
The only down side I've experienced is that it looks like crap in any version of MSIE.
jimwgreen.blogspot.com -
well WordPress can be a Pain in da Butt too* like having to Register + almost having to be a WordPOOP user in order to leave a bloody comment* Ridiculous*
i find OpenID can be a Pain in the Arse too!!

Well if you can't beat 'em, may as well join 'em
Thought I'd set my own blogger account up. What do you reckon :-)
solreka.blogspot.com/ -
I'm going to have to eat my words regarding my earlier defense of Blogger. I looked at my site using browsershots.org and discovered that my site is truncated in any version of IE and the font size is smaller in Firefox (I use Safari). So, the downside is that if anyone does happen upon my site and they are using IE, they won't be returning.
Blogger does not a offer technical support. Trying to find a real person connected with Blogger seems impossible. The Blogger help section has proved to be useless as well.

ThriftShopRomantic-
Maybe I should have created the site using IE instead of Safari. Still, for now, my site is pretty much dead in the water as it would appear that most people use IE as their favorite browsers and I have little to no skills at hand-coding. Plus I don't have a clue where to begin tweaking the existing XHTML code.-
Thrift Shop Romantic is right. You are always going to have problems with IE. Whenever I design a site I have to use hacks and workarounds to get the theme to work properly in IE.
Your font problem with Firefox is probably due to your stylesheet - although I just viewed it in Firefox 3 and the font size was fine. Perfectly readable. Are you using one of the Blogger themes or a custom one? Either way, if you want to try to fix it for IE I'll be happy to have a look.
-
-
kateblogs-
I am using one of Blogger's templates, but I customized the hell out of it using (as you've phrased it) 'hacks and work arounds'. It looks fine in all browsers, which the exception of any and all versions of IE.
I would love to waste your time. Just let me know how and when. -
The reason why they use captcha is to prevent spam. I didn't have it before because I felt the same way. But then I started getting spammed like crazy and it was more trouble then it was worth having to delete all the messages one by one. I don't use modification because I feel the same way about having to approve or disapprove one by one. That's why I started putting in Captcha and I started using IP banning.
-
Bleh. Blogger blogs. 1) They all look the same. 2) WP has tons more themes. 3) Comment box/captcha/can't always enter name/url? Ugh. I won't comment on those whatsoever.
For spam on WP blogs, Akismet rocks. There's also IP banning for trolls and stalkers. No problem. Supports favicons. What more can you ask for? Plus having a blogger.com address (or wordpress.com) just makes people think "amateur." [shrug] -
I started with Blogger, then went to blogspot - hated both I am now with wordpress.com - so, so much easier.
I don't have moderation on and the spam caught by the inbuilt spam collector is around 11,000 now. Some do get through but very little, so they are easy to sweep up. -
Blogger is fine. I've been using it for a few months now and my blog is doing great.
blogger blog > www.gxpblog.com -
I love Blogger - but then I started with it - so am probably biased.
I love the fact that it captures 100% spam.
I love the moderation. Otherwise every blog comment would be NOTHING more than CASINO ________ CASINO _____ and only SPAM content for those casinos. I don't mind other operators/webmasters coming over - VIEWING my blog and THEN commenting about the blog and leaving their link. But I hate AUTOSPAM.
Don't stop by JUST to post your link. Pay attention to what I am or what my blog is.
So - to me Blogger works.
Very Well.
Just my opinion - I'm sure that whatever you first start out on, usually is what you become comfortable with - and is usually what you choose to stick with.
So I could as easily have been enamored with WP or any other Blog Program out there. LOL! -
I have tried both Blogger and Wordpress (both the paid and free version). In spite of being free blogger has some easy to use features that makes it far superior to Wordpress ones. Even changing the colour of your blog is much easier in Blogger. I have written about more about the advantages of blogger blogs in my latest post: adsforblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/that-old-blogger-vs-wordpress-debate.html
And one more thing. Just type a comment in my blog and see how easy it is to add comments. -
Blogger itself is not bad. But truly there is a lot google has to do to make we bloggers feel that we are with out own website. How do you think my blog- dotnetspidor.blogspot.com? Please suggest me what should I do to make it better for the shake of all readers.
Thanks a lot! -
WHY ON EARTH USE BLOGGER. ALL YOU ARE DOING IS FEEDING BLOG JUICE TO GOOGLE AND HELPING THEM RAISE THEIR PROFILE (like they need more exposure online!!!).
Blogs are like real estate; the aim is NOT to have rented accommodation (eg a blogger blog) but instead to own your own land (eg have a domain which you own in all its entirety).
Having your own domain(blog) means you have full control over your 'real' estate, and the potential to earn big bucks. How many top domains use blogger... none. Hmmm I wonder why!
STOP BEING BUSY FOOLS - DITCH BLOGGER AND GET YOUR OWN DOMAIN NAME.
The simple truth is people don't do this because they can't be bothered to learn basic html. It is their loss, and google's gain.
You will NEVER have an authority site (eg Page Rank 4+) by using blogger.
I know I am wasting my breath, as the majority of people who use blogger (blogspot) are simply memetically engineered bloggers, and most of them harp on about the same old sh&^t; namely MMO.
Regards
solreka.com/blog-
Why must you be so offensive about it? What if I have my own domain name, but am still hosted by blogger? Why would I listen to someone who calls me a fool without knowing anything about my blogs or my situation? Hosting your own blog requires one hell of a lot more than basic HTML and you know it. You're entitled to your opinion, but belittling people is no way to convince them that you're right.
-
you don't know much about SEO if you think blogger blogs give blogger/blogspot "juice" (pagerank or otherwise).
Subdomains each have their own unique PR. Nothing is passed or shared. +I've seen blogger blogs of PR6.
Wordpress is a more "professional" blogging platform, but that still doesn't make blogger redundant.
-
-
wow soooo much discussion here already so I'll keep it quick, and sorry if it's already been said!
As I understand it, the moderation of comments is up to the person or people blogging on that blog; I know I can certainly change the settings on mine. The only reason I filter/moderate my comments is because of the advertising spam that I get, and I don't want that to be up there for all to see for however-many-hours before I get to remove it. I allow anonymous comments and don't even know what captcha is. You don't have to follow Blogger blogs if you don't like it, but that would be a shame as plenty of us have very good content

@legbamel
Fair point ref offensive tone. Put it down to my misanthropic nature. I apologize for any offence caused.
Yes, having one's own blog does require a LOT more work than basic html. I just hate seeing people feeding 'the system' ie corpocracies like google, youtube etc. More power to the people I say.
I apologize to the blogger fraternity. Blogger does indeed have its place, it depends what one's goals are when it comes to blogging.
