Hollywood? Pay Attention and be True to Yourself'

I will never forget my days living in Hollywood. Although I live in NC now, the drive to thrive in the industry is still in the works.

I can remember my many visits to Manns Chinese, as I lived around the corner, parking cars at the Hollywood Bowl, or waiting tables at the Sportsman Lodge in Studio City like it was yesterday.

I can always remember asking myself, "What do they want". This was perhaps my greatest mistake of all. You must always be true to yourself and put your heart and soul on the line. Hollywood is not a place for the timid.

I remember after an audition once the director asked me if I could hit a speed bag. The role was a bit part for a boxer. I knew I could pick this skill up again rather quickly but instead I said "er uh I guess" That director had singled me out and made his mind up that I was right for the part. He was just asking for a little reassurance. In my inexperienced way I did not pick up on this and did not get the part. I could've easily gotten through the two seconds of hitting the bag and let opportunity grow from there. I wasn't paying attention.

Another time a production company called and wanted me to be a scuba diving cop You know a quick scene when they drag a lake for a missing body. They asked me if I had my own equipment. I said "No" I realized I should've said "Yes" and just rented some basic scuba gear. I wasn't paying attention.

Whether you are a writer, actor, or production assistant. Pay attention and remeber what you're there for. Opportunity will knock and sometimes it sneaks up on you.
